Ubisoft Says PlayStation 5 Is Not Backwards Compatible With PS1, PS2, or PS3 Games

The PlayStation 5 is only backwards compatible with PS4 games according to a support page

Backward compatibility has become a bigger deal over the years. With each new console generation offering better performance but lacking the ability to play the previous generation games mean gamers have to ensure their consoles are constantly maintained. Some systems like the SNES are quite durable but some consoles like the Xbox 360 are prone to issues and once they're busted you'll have to find someone to fix it outside from the original manufacture which can be a hassle. Well, those hoping the PS5 would be an all-in-one PlayStation system with full backward compatibility should dash those hopes aside.

According to the support page for Ubisoft, the PlayStation 5 is only backward compatible with the PS4.

How does upgrading from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5 work?

As part of their next-gen UPGRADE PROCESS, PlayStation offer a number of features designed to help you move from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5.

PlayStation 4 players will be able to join multiplayer games with PlayStation 5 players.

We also have information on next-gen for the XBOX SERIES X.

This should've been expected. The original PS3 was backward compatible with PS2 and PS1 games but cost $600 because of it. On the other hand, Microsoft offers backward compatibility with Xbox and Xbox 360 games through digital updates but not full access. From personal experience, Area 51 is not playable on Xbox One or Xbox 360.

Sony has not commented on the story.
