Naughty Dog is open to the possibility of making a new entry in The Last of Us franchise but is probably done with Uncharted. This was confirmed by Neil Druckmann, the co-president of Naughty Dog, co-director of the two The Last of Us games, and co-creator of the recent HBO adaptation of said games. So, hopefully he has the authority to make statements of this variety.

The Last of Us Part II, The Last of Us, Uncharted, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Neil Druckmann, Naughty Dog, Sony, Buzzfeed, NoobFeed, Latest, News

Druckmann confirmed all of this in an interview with Buzzfeed. The Buzzfeed article is more in the form of a listicle, and item number 17, out of 20, discusses the games. The rest of the article is focused on the adaptation.

This 17th point explains that Naughty Dog was given the opportunity to end the story of Uncharted with the fourth game, and that the game was immensely successful but without the company being pressed into making additional entries. This means that Sony allows it to be up to Naughty Dog whether it continues with a franchise. So, Uncharted is done, but what about The Last of Us?

According to Druckmann, Naughty Dog will only make another entry in The Last of Us franchise if the team can come up with “a compelling story that has this universal message and statement about love.” This is far from a definitive confirmation, and Druckmann has also stated that if none of them can come up with anything, it will be fine because The Last of Us Part II ended on a strong note, so the story can always conclude there. There is no need for more of that story.

The possibility of a Part III is not entirely gone though. It could still happen, but in the meantime, Naughty Dog may do some other things with The Last of Us that aren’t a Part III. There’s even the suggestion of a multiplayer title. We’ll have to wait and see if anything comes of it though.
