Sony plans to launch its PS3 game streaming service, called PlayStation Now, for the PlayStation 4 on January 13 in the U.S. and Canada for $19.99 a month or $44.99 for three months. The service will start on PlayStation 4, followed by other PlayStation Now enabled devices.
A seven-day free trial will be available at launch for those seeking to try the service before purchasing a subscription. PlayStation Now will offer unlimited access to more than 100 PlayStation 3 games from publishers like Sega, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, Bandai Namco, and Sony Computer Entertainment.
"Users have been able to rent games through PlayStation Now for several months, and one of the top requests we get is for an overall subscription to the service. We're excited to formally announce it today, as the PlayStation Now subscription service will deliver a ton of value by providing instant access to a large and diverse catalogue of games for one low price," said Phil Rosenberg, Senior Vice President, Business Development and Publisher Relations, SCEA. "We know there are lots of PS4 owners that never owned a PS3, and this is a great way to catch up on games they may have missed."
The service will allow consumers to stream PS3 games without the need to download games or install the latest patch updates. Games sessions can either be saved on PlayStation Now’s cloud severs or on your console.
To celebrate the announcement Sony has released a free PlayStation Now theme for the PS4 that will automatically enter the user into a drawing. The winner will obtain a free one-year subscription to PlayStation Now.
