Assassin’s Creed: Codename Hexe Leaks Point to Ubisoft’s Darkest Game Yet with a Stronger Focus on Stealth

Recent reports suggest Ubisoft is moving away from the series’ RPG formula in favor of a smaller, darker experience inspired by witch-hunt history, social stealth, and psychological tension.

A wave of new rumors and leaks surrounding Assassin’s Creed: Codename Hexe has painted a much clearer picture of what Ubisoft may be developing. While none of the latest claims have been officially confirmed, they collectively suggest that Hexe could be one of the boldest departures the franchise has attempted in years.

Rather than building another massive open-world RPG, Ubisoft reportedly appears to be creating a darker, more focused adventure with an emphasis on stealth, mystery, and historical horror. If even part of the recent information proves accurate, Assassin’s Creed: Codename Hexe could significantly reshape the direction of the Assassin’s Creed series.

Ubisoft has shared very little official information about the project so far.

What the company has confirmed is that Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe is being developed by Ubisoft Montreal and is intended to deliver a darker, more story-driven experience than recent entries. From the moment it was announced, the game has been associated with witchcraft, mystery, and an unsettling atmosphere.

According to recent leaks, Assassin’s Creed: Codename Hexe may move away from the large RPG structure seen in Origins, Odyssey, Valhalla, and Shadows. Instead of sprawling maps, extensive leveling systems, and hundreds of side activities, you may be getting a more focused experience that places storytelling ahead of sheer size.

That direction could appeal to players who have been asking Ubisoft to return to a stealth-first Assassin’s Creed while still offering something different. It also reflects the divide among fans between those who enjoy the RPG formula and those who prefer the earlier games.

One of the biggest claims is that the game will take place around the year 1625 in Germany, specifically near Würzburg. That location is closely tied to one of the darkest witch-hunt periods in European history. Instead of just another story about the Assassins and Templars, the game could put you in a world of religious paranoia, political manipulation, and fear.

If the reports are to be believed, expect a world of foggy forests, narrow German streets, church bells, whispered conversations, and places of public execution. The idea is that it’s a society where everyone is always suspicious of everyone else and there is tension beyond the normal combat encounters.

Recent leaks have also introduced new details about the game's main character. Earlier rumors referred to the protagonist as Elsa, but newer reports claim that was only a placeholder name used during development. The current claim is that the main character is actually named Anika, although Ubisoft has not confirmed that information.

Another rumor making the rounds is a potential connection between Anika and one of the franchise’s most recognizable families.

According to the latest reports, she is related to Claudia Auditore, sister of Ezio Auditore. If that information turns out to be accurate, Assassin’s Creed: Codename Hexe would introduce a new protagonist and reconnect the series with one of its most beloved legacies. At the moment, however, that connection remains nothing more than an unverified leak.

The reported link to the Auditore family has naturally sparked excitement among longtime fans. Despite that, the leaks suggest Ezio himself will not physically return in the game, as that would not fit the historical timeline. Instead, reports speculate that his presence could come through recorded messages, memories, Isu technology, or another Animus-related feature.

Elsewhere, reports suggest Ubisoft could find a more meaningful way to use Ezio's history. Anika could find teachings, hidden messages, or Assassin secrets related to the Auditore family instead of fan service. That would allow the franchise to acknowledge one of its most iconic characters while still focusing on an entirely new story.

The gameplay itself may also see major changes. According to several leaks, Assassin’s Creed: Codename Hexe will place a much stronger emphasis on stealth than recent entries. NPCs are reportedly capable of reporting suspicious behavior to local authorities, meaning your actions in public could have real consequences.

The witch-hunt setting could also give social stealth a much larger role. Earlier Assassin’s Creed games encouraged players to disappear into crowds, blend with civilians, and avoid drawing attention. Hexe may build on that concept by turning frightened townsfolk into potential threats instead of reliable cover.

Another reported gameplay feature is increased movement in forest environments. Leaked info hints at a possible addition of tree-to-tree traversal in the game, which would allow for faster traversal of forested areas. If implemented, forests could become just as important as towns when approaching missions.

Assassin’s Creed: Codename Hexe Letter A in Woods

The subject of magic has become one of the most significant points of discussion surrounding the project.

Earlier rumors suggested Assassin’s Creed: Codename Hexe would introduce supernatural abilities, curses, and witchcraft into the series. However, more recent reports suggest Ubisoft may be taking a more grounded approach. Anika might use alchemy, chemical concoctions, smoke machines, and psychology to convince people she has supernatural powers, rather than casting real spells.

That direction would fit more naturally within Assassin’s Creed's established universe. The Wmachines series has long included Isu technology, Pieces of Eden, and Animus-based science fiction, but it has generally avoided presenting actual magic as reality. It would enable Hexe to maintain the franchise’s identity by attributing supernatural events to modern technology or misunderstood science.

Another feature reportedly removed during development is a cat companion that had appeared in earlier rumors. The animal could be useful in exploration or for locating hidden areas, according to early reports. More recent leaker information suggests the feature was cut as Ubisoft moved towards a darker, more grounded tone.

Rumors about its development seem to suggest that Hexe has changed quite a lot. Reports claim Clint Hocking left the project before Jean Guesdon took over as creative director. Guesdon has played an important role in previous Assassin’s Creed games, making his reported involvement noteworthy.

Additional reports also claim that some developers working on Assassin’s Creed: Codename Hexe were reassigned to other Ubisoft projects. That does not necessarily indicate the game has been canceled or delayed. Instead, it could be a reflection of changes in scope, budget management, or production priorities. Ubisoft has been more cautious in the last few years, balancing financial pressures with the expectations around its biggest franchises.

The most mentioned release window is June 2027. The reports, however, emphasize that the date is just an internal target and not a confirmed launch date. Some sources believe the game could slip into the Holiday 2027 release period instead. Until Ubisoft officially announces a date, we should view any timeline as speculation.

Assassin’s Creed: Codename Hexe Witch Elsa Standing

Ubisoft's decision to reveal very little about Hexe may also be intentional.

The company is likely paying close attention to how players respond to Assassin’s Creed Shadows before fully presenting its next major direction for the franchise. If Assassin’s Creed: Codename Hexe truly is a smaller, darker, and more experimental game, introducing it too early could create unrealistic expectations. Careful marketing may prove just as important as the game itself.

The most significant challenge may be reconciling its darker themes with Assassin’s Creed’s identity. If Ubisoft is treating the witch-hunt setting as simply another backdrop, the idea is likely to feel underwhelming to many players. But if you go too far with the supernatural stuff, you might make your show feel out of place in the world you’ve created.

Based on everything that has surfaced over the past two months, Assassin’s Creed: Codename Hexe appears to be one of Ubisoft’s most ambitious and unconventional projects. Instead of simply exploring another historical setting, the game may also introduce a noticeably different tone for the franchise.

After the epic battles of Valhalla, the mythological themes of Odyssey, and the dual-protagonist setup of Shadows, Assassin’s Creed: Codename Hex could offer up something that’s much smaller, darker, and more suspenseful. If the latest rumors are true, this installment could be one of the most unique Assassin’s Creed games in years, though the biggest details are still unknown until Ubisoft officially reveals more information.
