Earlier this month, market research firm The NPD Group reported that total United States video game sales had reached $9.58 billion during Q1 (January-March), an 11% increase over Q1 2019. Now, top selling games like Final Fantasy VII: Remake, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons have pushed April sales to record numbers.

On May 22, NPD Analyst Mat Piscatella released further data that April 2020 had alone earned $1.5 billion in total video game sales, a 73% increase over April 2019. $662 million accounted for full game sales (physical and digital) and $420 million from hardware sales.

However, NPD noted that some publishers withhold sales numbers, including Activision Blizzard who does not disclose Battle.net figures. Further, downloadable content, micro-transactions and subscriptions were not factored in.

Based on this, the top 10 selling games by USD for April 2020 were as follows:

1. Final Fantasy VII: Remake
2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
3. Animal Crossing: New Horizons
4. NBA 2K20
5. Grand Theft Auto 5
6. Resident Evil 3
7. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2: Remastered
8. MLB The Show 20
9. Madden NFL 20
10. Red Dead Redemption 2

Additionally, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, NBA 2K20, and Madden NFL 20 were the top selling games over the last 12 months.
