Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag Started off As Assassin's Creed III DLC
After discussing DLC for Assassin's Creed III it was decided it would be its own game

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is often considered one of the best in the series. The game starred Edward Kenway, a broken pirate who ends up growing throughout the adventure. Playing a role in the Templars and Assassin Order for a profit before deciding to join the Assassin Order. The struggle of Edward provided a refreshing experience, offering a more personalized story instead of focusing on the Templar Assassin War and have the character star around it. In Black Flag, Edward was the star and his profound journey of self-discovery was one that remains a highlight in the franchise.
In a recent interview with Ubisoft's Jean Guesdon, Ashraf Ismail, and Darby McDevitt new information about the game's development was revealed. Including how it started as Assassin's Creed III DLC.
According to Darby, pitches started with Assassin's Creed III DLC. For those unaware, the DLC for Assassin's Creed III had players taking down King Washington in an alternative reality. However, according to Darby the team originally was going to have the DLC campaign star Edward but in short campaigns during the 1600s until the 1720s. The ideas grew and they decided to make it into a new game instead.
In the autumn of 2011, after I had returned from doing press for Assassin's Creed Revelations, I sat down with a few people from the Assassin's Creed team — Jean and Alexandre Amancio among them — and started planning a suite of DLCs that would stretch from the late 1600s into the 1720s. The idea would be to start with Edward as a teenager under Henry Avery, and end somewhere around the days of Bartholomew Roberts. We figured four to six unique missions of about two hours each would tell a pretty comprehensive story.
When we put the entire pitch together, we realized the idea would be far better as a stand-alone game. The prospect of playing as a pirate was too tantalizing. At some point around the 2011–12 holiday, Alex Amancio — creative director for Assassin's Creed Revelations — pitched the idea as a full triple-A game. Then, before our editorial team in Paris agreed to it, Alex surprised us all by leaving Ubisoft to try his hand outside video games. When the game was green-lit, Jean stepped in as creative director and Ashraf came on board as game director ... and then we made the thing.
The interview has a lot of interesting facts about Edward and how the game was developed. Such as Edward raiding ships and the Assassin's creed, and even how the name came into being.
Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is now available for PS4, PC, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PS3. It'll release for Nintendo Switch along with Assassin's Creed Rogue this December 6th.
