Hideaki Itsuno, the original Dragon's Dogma director, made the announcement in today's "10 Years of Dragon's Dogma" Developer Video. Following a discussion of the ideas for the monsters, action, and unique gameplay features that distinguish the high-fantasy setting and open-world action of Dragon's Dogma, this eagerly awaited announcement was made. The announcement was made with the unveiling of a logo for a planned sequel.
Itsuno started the developer video by reflecting on how he was first exposed to high fantasy and RPGs via the old pen-and-paper role-playing games. Itsuno developed a love for arcade and action games, particularly the fighting of Capcom's Street Fighter II, after these early encounters. Before long, Itsuno was working on the game that would become Dragon's Dogma for Capcom's arcade division, where he had already launched several games. Itsuno would have to put this desire on hold to complete the creation of Devil May Cry 2 and its follow-ups, Devil May Cry 3 and Devil May Cry 4, respectively.
Itsuno returned to his favorite project after finishing the creation of the Devil May Cry games. Although the game's innovative Pawn System helped it become a fan favorite, its unique approach to magic battle and the ability to grapple towering adversaries already set it different from its peers. By enabling users to share their AI companions, Itsuno wanted to maintain the game's single-player focus while allowing players to form social bonds. The rolling hills and distinctive architecture of the environment players would explore were influenced by the production team's excursions to the United Kingdom when the game was being developed.
As Itsuno concluded his look back at the beginnings of Dragon's Dogma, he offered fans a sneak peek at what's to come in the sequel. Daigo Ikeno and Kenichi Suzuki, who worked on the first game, are back for Dragon's Dogma 2, and they can't wait to reveal more information about their progress.
