A complete guide on how to do the Pilgrimage quest in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered.

Game Guide by Groot on  May 09, 2025

This guide covers the complete pilgrimage quest in Oblivion Remastered. Begin in Anvil after the chapel attack by speaking to locals about the preacher. You'll meet a man who tells you about a pilgrimage to collect divine artifacts by visiting nine wayshrines across Cyrodiil.

Important Note: This quest resets your infamy level. If you do anything that increases your infamy during the quest (murder, theft, etc.), you'll have to restart the entire pilgrimage. Avoid any Thieves Guild missions or criminal activities until completion.

The Nine Wayshrines

1. Arkay Wayshrine

It's north of Anvil and southeast of Bleak Mine. You can't see wayshrines on your map, so you'll have to look for them by hand. Talk to the shrine and wait for your quest log to be updated before moving on.

2. Mara Wayshrine

Found west of Skingrad, near the cursed mine. These pagoda-like structures with pillars are distinctive landmarks. Approach, interact, and wait for the quest update.

3. Dibella Wayshrine

Located south of Weynon Priory and Chorrol in the northwest area. It sits in a dip below some hills, making it slightly more challenging to spot. Follow your compass to find it.

4. Akatosh Wayshrine

Found south of the Orange Road and south of Bruma. From Wildeye Stables, head down to the nearby road and look for a small staircase leading up to the shrine.

5. Julianos Wayshrine

Located southeast of the Imperial City, southwest of Fort Sejanus. If traveling along the Yellow Road, you'll find it just off the main path. Note that there are similar structures nearby (aided wells), so use your compass.

6. Kynareth Wayshrine

Found by the Basin on the east side of the map, with Deserted Mine to the north. Head for the small lake in this area and you'll find the shrine nearby.

7. Talos Wayshrine

Located south of Imperial City, southeast of Harcane Grove, just off the shore and pathway.

8. Zenithar Wayshrine

One of the easiest to find is directly north of Bravil in the southern part of the map. From the stables, walk north and you'll see it from the road.

9. Stendarr Wayshrine

The final wayshrine is in the south, between Bravil and Leyawiin, just north of Water's Edge settlement. It's situated just off the road near a small peninsula.

The Underwater Shrine

After completing all nine wayshrines, your map will mark the following location. Head to the bridge and jump off (water breathing is helpful here). Swim until you reach the red arrow marker, where you'll find a bright door underwater.

Inside, fight through the dungeon until you reach the final room of the first section. Look for a small switch on the wall in the corner to open the passage ahead. Be prepared for serious combat in the later areas - stock up on healing potions and spells.

In the second area, you'll eventually find a locked door with a body nearby. Important: Loot everything from the body, especially the ring, book, and key. The ring is crucial for the next stage.

Use the nearby pillars to climb back up to where you entered, then jump across to reach the helmet. You'll need a weapon effective against ghosts here. Take the helmet from the pedestal to obtain your first divine artifact.

The Priory of the Nine

Next, visit the Priory of the Nine. Inside, use the ring on the star pattern on the floor, then head to the basement. Prepare for a challenging battle against 7-9 spectral knights. They aren't actual ghosts, so standard weapons work, but the fight is intense.

Collecting the Divine Artifacts

Nature's Fury (Boots)

Head east of the Mog Bal Shrine and speak to the NPC. Accept the trial and go west as directed. Wait until a giant forest guardian bear appears and attacks you. DO NOT attack back - you may use defensive and healing spells, but attacking will fail the quest. After the bear dies naturally, enter the cave and claim the boots.

Wisdom of the Ages (Shield)

Travel to Fort Bulwark in the southeast. Enter the ground-level dungeon entrance and navigate through:

1. Head down the stairs, turn left

2. Go down the next set of stairs (you can bypass the Storm Atronach)

3. Take a left, then go through the door

4. Use switches to activate drawbridges and open gates

For the puzzle door, press: left-hand side, center, far right, then far left. The correct plates make a heavy sound, not a "ting."

Free the prisoner in the second cell on the right for a clue. Continue through the trapped corridor (the ceiling arrows cause minimal damage).

In the statue puzzle room, rotate all statues to face the center pedestal, then stand on the pedestal.

For the chest puzzle:

1. Place the goblet in the corner chest

2. Place the skull in the indicated chest

3. Place Roger's gem in the corner chest

4. Place Roger's book in the next chest

5. Place Roger's hammer in its chest

6. Place Roger's sword in the remaining corner

7. Place Roger's helm in the middle chest

8. Place Roger's stone in the final chest

Once completed, the door behind the central chest opens. Enter the final room to claim the shield.

Stendarr's Mercy (Gauntlets)

Go to Chorrol's chapel and speak to the priest. He'll tell you about Kellen, who is downstairs. Speak to Kellen about his curse, then return to the priest, who explains you must take the curse upon yourself.

Pray at the altar of the nine to receive the Lay on Hands spell, then return to Kellen and cast it on him. This transfers the curse to you, allowing you to retrieve the gauntlets.

Path of the Righteous (Mace)

Head to Leyawiin's church and speak to the priest. Enter the undercroft to find a statue that teleports you to your final challenge. Equip the Boots of the Crusader to walk across the bridge and claim the mace.

The Final Pieces

The Greaves

Return to the Priory of Nine, where new NPCs will ask to join your order. Invite them in, and one will give you the greaves. They'll also give you a quest to Underpall Cave to defeat a lich and obtain the final piece: the sword.

The Faithful Squire (Sword)

Enter Underpall Cave and continue until you reach the keep. Inside the keep, take an immediate left twice to get to the reflecting chamber where the boss awaits. This approach avoids unnecessary fights that could deplete your supplies.

After defeating the lich, claim the sword and head to Cheydinhal's chapel. Be prepared for enemies inside. Use the altar to cleanse the sword, then return to the priory to speak with the knights.

Final Challenge: Umaril The Unfeathered

The final dungeon is straightforward but extremely difficult. Consider lowering the difficulty if you're struggling, as even on easier settings, the battle is challenging. Bring plenty of healing supplies regardless of your difficulty setting.

This epic quest offers remarkable rewards and a deeply satisfying conclusion to one of Oblivion's most memorable adventures.
