E3 2010: Portal 2 Heads to PS3

Sony’s press conference on Tuesday, June 15 was filled with montages of countless games. From Playstation Move launch titles to Killzone 3D – and the great entrance of one Kevin Butler, Sony was dressed to impress. But none of us expected Valve to show up. A surprise indeed.

Sony Computer Entertainment of America CEO (and host) Jack Tretton was interrupted by Valve studio head, Gabe Newell. As some may already know, Gabe Newell is known for his outspoken comments on the current-gen consoles, especially his infamous diatribes against the Playstation 3. Newell didn’t waste his presence at the Sony briefing, as he announced that Portal 2 will be arriving not only on the Xbox 360 and PC, but the Playstation 3 as well.

Newell also said the Playstation 3 version of Portal 2 will be “the best console version of the game,” as it will be Steamwork-supported. For those who are unfamiliar with it, Steamworks is a developer toolset that allows them to update their games through Steam. That includes updates such as downloadable content and system updates as well. This will not be included in the 360 version of the game.

Portal 2 will once again follow Chell, as she will face torment from the one and only GLaDOS. Players will face multiple portal challenges, testing their patience through mind-bending puzzles that get harder as they progress. Portal 2 has reported to be delayed until 2011, but this announcement sounds like a victory for Playstation 3 owners.
