If you've been keeping an eye on the extraction shooter scene, then there is no way you haven't heard the name Exoborne. Developed by Sharkmob, this open-world tactical extraction shooter isn't just like any other PvP game. It's a mix of PvP, PvE, and unpredictable weather that can either help or destroy you.

And don't worry, you won't be left out of the action; the next closed test opens on September 16, and you can sign up through Steam. What makes Exoborne stand out in the crowded extraction shooter space is, first off, the Exo-Rigs. These aren't just cosmetics; they're exoskeletons that may alter your strategy in battle.

The inclusion of perpetual advancement was one of the most notable changes from previous playtests in this most recent iteration. So, you may level up your suit, unlock upgrades, and power up with every kill, task, and treasure you earn. Once you start tinkering with mods, the "power fantasy" kicks in.

One standout feature that gives Exoborne its unique flavor is the "Force of Nature" events. Set in an apocalyptic US torn apart by extreme forces of nature, you'll have to go through storms, tornadoes, and lightning strikes that can easily wipe you out. Gusts of wind can launch you across the map faster, and timing your movements around these hazards can give you "I am him" moments.

The maps are large and varied, ranging from towns to smaller areas such as Agnesville and The Sinkhole. On the bigger maps, engagements are fewer, while the smaller maps are pure chaos. Now, enemies range from other squads to massive NPCs, including tank-like bosses that can take 10–15 minutes to bring down solo.

You'll face off against everything from other teams to huge NPCs, including monsters resembling tanks that may be solo-defeated in as little as ten to fifteen minutes. Combating them requires more than just firepower; you must also manage the attention of other squads, some of whom may hear your gunfire and try to steal your stuff.

The rush of obtaining rare treasure, such as an item of the purple tier, after vanquishing one of these foes is very memorable. Don't say we didn't warn you later! Weapons are satisfying and balanced enough. You switch between first-person aiming and third-person movement, making combat smooth.

All of the weapons have their own distinct feel, and the mod system lets you add useful improvements that improve your stats. The diverse loadout system allows you to carry a variety of equipment, including two weapons, two abilities, armor, a backpack, a catalyst, and even a safe cache to keep certain items in the event of mortality. Put in some daily goals, challenges, and quests, and you have a game.

For those who prefer co-op play, the game shines even brighter. While the playtest was limited and I mostly queued solo, the moments when I teamed up with a full squad were electric. Exoborne is built for team play.

Each Exo-Rig plays a critical role in these encounters: mobile Exo-Rigs help you maneuver quickly, invisible Exo-Rigs allow for escapes, and juggernaut Exo-Rigs turn you into a force to be reckoned with. If you're more of a loot-driven player than a story-first gamer, Exoborne has you covered. The game's progression is tied to the extraction loop, and unlike some other shooters, there are no planned wipes.

The loot system itself is tiered, ranging from common to legendary, and you can craft weapons, attachments, abilities, armor, backpacks, and catalysts using collected materials. Areas with the best loot are heavily guarded, naturally drawing you into high-stakes encounters. You'll die, sure, but oh well… that's the fun of playing Exoborne.

Performance-wise, the game runs beautifully. On a PC with a 40-series card, I experienced zero frame drops, despite a lot of hard-hitting combat and large maps. The clarity of the objectives and points of interest on the map is excellent, making it easy to understand what you need to do and where to go.

Fans of extraction shooters will feel a sense of familiarity. But Exoborne adds its own spin with unique environmental hazards and a more futuristic setting. While I can't answer all the long-term questions yet, you'll have to find out for yourself when the game comes out.

However, the game's short-term gameplay loop is compelling enough to hook any fan of extraction shooters. Even in small playtest sessions, the intensity of dying to players you just killed (thanks to persistent servers) was hilarious and unexpected.

In summary, if extraction shooters are your jam, Exoborne is right where you want to be. Sharkmob has crafted an experience that's both challenging and satisfying. The next closed test on September 16 is your chance to jump in, explore, and see firsthand why we love this game.
