Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious RPGs in recent memory. This is coming straight from a wave of fresh interviews with director Naoki Hamaguchi and the development team, all dropping around the same time. From a brand new job system to the return of Midgar, there is genuinely a lot to unpack here.

The biggest new mechanic being introduced in Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is something called the FITS system, a job-based outfit system that essentially lets you reshape how each character plays. There are four different outfit types, and every character in your party can equip any of them, slotting them into roles like warrior or mage depending on how you want to build your team.

What makes it even better is that there is a built-in skill tree, meaning you are actively leveling up the job itself.

If you decide to swap that outfit onto a different character, all the abilities you already unlocked carry over, so nothing goes to waste. Battle director Teruki Endo specifically designed it that way, and it shows; this is clearly meant to reward experimentation rather than punish it.

One concern that came up immediately when the FITS system was first shown was that it would change how the characters look, pulling them away from the outfits people have come to associate with them. Hamaguchi addressed that directly. The system works similarly to Final Fantasy XIV's glamour mechanic, meaning you can keep the visual appearance of one outfit while actually running the stats and abilities of another.

So if you want Cloud in his classic look while using a mage-type build, that is entirely possible. Tetsuya Nomura, for his part, is the one overseeing the outfit designs, and the direction varies from character to character. The FITS system unlocks early in Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, which makes sense given how central it seems to the overall experience.

Similarly, the Highwind airship is available from the very start of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation; there is no long buildup, no waiting. Since the party already had the Highwind by the end of Rebirth, it would have felt strange to take it away. From what Hamaguchi describes, large portions of the world are accessible right away through the Highwind, though venturing into certain areas early will get you absolutely destroyed by the enemies there.

It creates that same feeling of freedom with consequences that made the original FF7 so replayable once you had the airship; go wherever you want, but know your limits.

The world itself has also changed since Rebirth. Because the weapons have awakened and are causing seismic activity across the planet, terrain in areas you already explored has shifted. So when you return to places like Cosmo Canyon or Gongaga, they are not going to look identical to how they did before. It is a smart way to handle things.

It gives the team a reason to refresh those environments rather than just reuse them wholesale, and it makes the world feel like it is actually reacting to what is happening in the story. Hamaguchi confirmed that Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will have one definitive ending. There are no multiple endings, no branching conclusions depending on your choices. What does change is the path you take to get there.

Player decisions will have consequences that are more visible and pronounced than they were in Rebirth, and your relationships with characters will evolve differently depending on how you treat them. Making positive choices toward someone like Tifa or Barrett will have a noticeably stronger impact on your dynamic with them. Every player could end up with a meaningfully different journey, even if they all reach the same destination.

The affinity system is being reworked to reflect this. In Rebirth, everything was filtered through Cloud's perspective; his relationships with the rest of the party were the focal point. In Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, the system expands so that every character has their own dynamics with everyone else. Barrett has his own relationships independent of Cloud, Tifa has hers, and so on.

It adds a whole extra layer to how the party feels like a living group of people rather than a cast orbiting one main character.

Zack is back, and he is more prominent than ever in Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. His role is described as helping players understand that the world of the Remake series is not identical to the original; there are differences, there are elements that deviate, and Zack is the character through whom those differences get communicated.

The development team is using Zack to explore the idea of multiple timelines, and he will have more scenes than he did in Rebirth. Other guest characters will also appear as temporarily playable at certain points in the story. On the locations front, Rocket Town is confirmed for Final Fantasy 7 Revelation after Hamaguchi revealed the team actually wanted to include it in Rebirth but held it back.

It shows up later in the story, and given that Cid is now a full party member, the history between him and Shera and the whole backstory around the rocket launch feels like it is finally going to get its proper moment. The underwater area is also confirmed, though Hamaguchi would not say much about it beyond acknowledging it will appear. Anyone who played the original knows there is a lot tied to that section; the submarine, the sunken wreckage, the weapon, the reactor, so that is one to watch.

Midgar is returning as an explorable location, and with it comes the possibility of encountering Deep Ground characters like Weiss and Nero. Hamaguchi was pretty clear when asked about them; he told fans to look forward to it, which is about as close to a confirmation as you are going to get without a flat-out announcement. Whether those encounters are side content or woven into the main story is still unknown. Biggs and Wedge, notably Wedge who survived, are also expected to factor in given the return to Midgar.

Wutai is getting a full political storyline this time around, and the Turks are going to be heavily involved. Reno, who was absent from Rebirth due to issues with his voice actor, has had a replacement cast and will have significant screen time. Reno is too important a character to leave out of the endgame, and having him back alongside the rest of the Turks for the Wutai arc specifically makes a lot of sense to anyone familiar with how that part of the original story played out.

As for Knights of the Round, Hamaguchi revealed that the summon came up in discussions during every single part of the FF7 Remake series.

The team is actively working on content worthy of what Knights of the Round represents. He told fans to look forward to seeing how it gets presented. Whether it ends up as a massive one-time story moment or a recurring summon you can use in battle is still unknown, but the fact that it is being handled with that much care is a good sign.

Mini-games are staying, and there will be plenty of them; the team is just tuning down the difficulty compared to Rebirth for players who struggled. The Scarlet and Tifa slap fight on the cannon is confirmed as a mini-game, which should put a lot of minds at ease about whether that iconic moment was making it in. If you were hoping Knights of the Round would show up as a summon you can actually use in battle, that still seems to be on the table.

Chadley is also back, now researching newly awakened weapons and Meteor 2, and his role apparently ties directly into the main story this time rather than functioning purely as a side-content hub. Vincent can switch in and out of beast mode with a single button press; no time limit, no limit break required. It works similarly to how Yuffie operates with her shuriken mode, which means he is far more fluid in combat than his OG counterpart.

Cid, meanwhile, is built around aerial combat,  agile, airborne, and clearly designed to feel like his limit breaks have always implied he should. New story content will also cover locations and communities that were not explored much in the original; there is room to go deeper into places like the Gi Tribe, for example, and Hamaguchi suggested entirely new areas could show up as well.

The Final Fantasy 7 Revelation game was also demonstrated on PS5 at Summer Game Fest, and it appeared much sharper compared to how Rebirth performed on the same console. The game will also release for PC and Switch 2, and according to the developers, they aim to have PS5 and PC versions ready before starting work on the Switch 2 one.

With such visuals on the PS5, the PC version is expected to perform even better. This game carries a lot of meaning not only for longtime fans but also newcomers who played the Rebirth remake, and for the company itself. All of the interviews make it clear how important this project is for its creators.
