id Tech 5 ZeniMax-only

Hello there, established development studio. I bet you've had some good times with Unreal Engine 3 or id Tech 4. It's been good to you all these years.

But lately you've had your eyes on id Tech 5, that shiny new engine under the hood of Rage. Bet you'd love to get your hands on that, wouldn't you? Well, that's too bad, 'cause ZeniMax Media isn't in the mood to share.

After years of licensing out their game engines, the latest from id Software will be exclusive to ZeniMax and Bethesda Softworks.

id CEO Todd Hollenshead told Eurogamer that to keep a competitive advantage, "we want to keep it within games we publish. If you're going to make a game with id Tech 5 then it needs to be published by Bethesda, which I think is a fair thing."

While this limits the reach of the new engine, Hollenshead didn't rule out the possibility of third-party developers using it to create a game published by Bethesda.

This doesn't mean id Tech 4 has seen its last days, though. The roughly six-year-old engine is currently being used for Bethesda's upcoming shooter Brink, and was also used for last year's Wolfenstein.
