Microsoft May Be Done With Game Codes

Xbox One X Cyberpunk 2077 Edition contains no game codes.

Game codes have become a staple with digital purchases from physical stores, and form an integral part of new console bundles. However, one of the more recent Xbox One X bundles, the Cyberpunk 2077 Edition, doesn’t come with a game code, and that might be normal for the Xbox Series X too.

Reddit user Ammika13 posted an image of the card they received with their console bundle. It shows that the game, in this case Cyberpunk 2077, will download to the console as part of its set up. However, since the game won’t be out until September, it’s likely that it will simply download as soon as it’s made available from the Xbox Store.

According to Ammika13, the set-up process now includes a step that asks if you want to claim the game that is bundled with the console. If you do, the game is then tied to that account, but you do have the option to delay the decision and choose to claim it later.

Usually the console bundle would have come with a game code, which someone could then offer to a friend if they already owned the game, or had purchased a special edition separately. With this Xbox One X bundle at least, that’s not possible.

Ammika13 confirmed that the Xbox Games Pass Ultimate pass that comes with the console works in the same way, and was added to their existing subscription.

While this system may work moving into the next-generation for keeping the size of console bundles down, it may annoy consumers. Those who want to buy a special edition of a game will now effectively be buying it twice if they also get it bundled with their console. This could also impact the pre-owned games market, since consumers won’t be able to trade unwanted games in, or share them.
