Netflix is Making a AAA Shooter

It appears that Netflix is planning on making a AAA shooter at some point, and this shooter, if the current information is anything to go on, will be a live service, as Netflix itself has stated that it wants someone with “extensive experience working on live service games.”

 

Netflix Games Studio, as the division within the streaming giant has been named, somewhat inadvertently announced this by posting a job listing for a game director, and then MobileGamer.Biz uncovered a few additional details, such as that the game is being led by the former Overwatch producer and Blizzard Vice-President Chacko Sonny.

This new game, if the listing is accurate, will be a shooter of some description, it will be narratively on par with something that Netflix would release as a series, it will be made using the Unreal Engine, it will focus on both cooperative and competitive social systems and gameplay, and that it must “appeal to 10’s or 100’s of millions of players around the world,” a somewhat lofty goal.

We don’t have much information, but we do know that Netflix is looking for candidates with over ten years of experience, so it’s not planning on hiring just anybody. The streaming service appears to want in on games badly, probably because the gaming market is ever-increasing and shares an audience with streaming in general. Not to mention the fact that Amazon has been dabbling, with some success, in video games for a few years. You need to do what your competitor does, don’t you?

So, it should be interesting to see what Netflix does in the next few months as it has been releasing games at a somewhat steady rate for a while. Hopefully this new project of theirs is a good one.
