NHL 13 Roster to Feature Female Athletes

News by Megan Bethke on  Aug 31, 2012

After a 14-year-old female emailed the EA SPORTS development team, female players were added to NHL 12. They were playable through the Be a Pro mode because of the girls influential email. She "felt that female players were underrepresented in the game and wanted to see a more inclusive experience in the game." EA SPORTS NHL team wanted to continue the endeavor with NHL 13, and provide women "the opportunity to see themselves in the game."

NHL 13 will feature female athletes on the roster; the first of any professional league simulation sports video game to do so. The featured female athletes are former team USA defenseman Angela Ruggiero and former team Canada forward Hayley Wickenheiser. The ice hockey medalists will be playable as legends on NHL 13.

Ruggiero and Wickenheiser are both four-time olympic medalists playable in NHL 13.

In NHL 13 legends will be incorporated through three modes. In Be A Legend mode gamers play their entire Be A Pro career as the legendary athlete (i.e. Angela Ruggiero). Players attempt to break records, achieve milestones, and complete tasks. Play as the legends Team, Team Ruggiero, or team Wickenheiser through Legends Teams; including play now, online, and battle for the cup modes. Hockey Ultimate Team & Be a GM includes the ability to add legends to any team roster in Be a GM mode and collect legends cards to use within their Hockey Ultimate Team experience.

NHL 13 releases in the US on September 11th and in Europe on September 14th.
