Nintendo's latest console, the Nintendo Switch, has taken the world by storm, selling more units than the Wii U and debuting with many exclusive titles that sold millions of copies. However, some are wondering if the 3DS is next on Nintendo's chopping block, seeing that the console was released back in 2011 and has new modified versions now available. The answer is no.

Nintendo CEO Tatsumi Kimishima took the opportunity to speak about plans for the 3DS during Nintendo’s quarterly fiscal review. Unfortunately for 3DS fans, the news isn’t damning, but it isn’t hopeful either.

“We are, of course, continuing to develop new software, but we believe it is important to leverage the rich library of Nintendo 3DS series titles to drive sales with Nintendo 3DS owners.”

Nintendo still plans to support the handheld system despite the system's most acclaimed franchise, Pokemon, moving away from it. The final core games are Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.

The system could become a haven for older virtual console releases, as the release of Pokemon Crystal has shown. With the upcoming release of Detective Pikachu, Nintendo is still adamant about delivering content for handheld users.
