After eagerly awaiting updates about a remake of Resident Evil: Code Veronica, fans need not look any further because it seems Capcom has finally unveiled its secret to the world at Summer Game Fest 2026. This time around, however, the announcement may have taken many by surprise, as the game presented is definitely not the same one fans have fond memories of.

It is safe to say that Code Veronica was a unique game in many ways. Not only did it offer an experience that was quite unique compared to the rest of the series, but the game was rather eccentric and outrageous at times. Now, however, everything that has been shown from the new game shows it to be heading into a different direction entirely.

Perhaps one of the first things that strikes you is the new beginning Claire Redfield experiences in the remake.

In the original version, you find yourself plunged right into the action; she has already made her way into Umbrella's laboratory in Paris, gets caught, gets chased around, and ends up getting shipped off to Rockfort Island before you have any idea what happened. A fast-paced and intense opening, to say the least, setting the tone for the entire game. However, the remake starts off on a completely different note.

Here you get to watch Claire visiting what seems like Chris Redfield's apartment, trying to find him after the events in Resident Evil 2. It sets a slower pace and gives the audience a chance to understand better what is going on before chaos ensues. It is clear that Capcom is giving the Resident Evil: Code Veronica Remake an entire overhaul.

Now here comes the part that truly surprised a lot of people. As Claire is investigating the apartment, she is abducted not by any Umbrella soldiers but by HUNK. This is the very same "Grim Reaper," whose identity still constitutes one of the biggest mysteries in the entire show series, that is entering the storyline of the video game.

In the original version, the relationship between HUNK and Code Veronica was deeply rooted in the lore and went almost unnoticed by most players. He had his own mission on Rockfort Island, but nothing too overt or obvious happened there. But Capcom seems to be planning on bringing HUNK into the spotlight and tying him to their newest installment.

That's a big deal, and it will connect Resident Evil: Code Veronica Remake to the rest of the Resident Evil saga.

However, there is an implication made by this trailer that might alter your perception of moving in this game as well. Specifically, the trailer mentions a tag related to a motorbike that appeared on the page dedicated to the remake on Steam for Resident Evil Code Veronica. Insider Dusk Golem claims that this information coincides with what he heard about the remake.

Allegedly, Rockfort Island will be reimagined as a semi-open world environment where Claire repairs a motorcycle that helps her travel through it. If it is true, then this is going to be one of the most drastic departures from the previous game because exploration was very different before. The bigger Rockfort Island will mean new locations and new secrets.

There sure are going to be a lot of questions asked. Many characters will play important roles in the Resident Evil: Code Veronica Remake, and they include Alfred Ashford, Alexia Ashford, and Chris Redfield. The way Capcom incorporates them into the plot may reveal a lot about faithfulness to the original. However, based on everything we have seen thus far, Capcom is clearly not afraid to experiment.

Resident Evil: Code Veronica was an early pioneer of sorts back when it released, but there were some elements of the game that didn't really hold up very well compared to other installments in the series. Through the use of a remake, Capcom would be able to adjust the game as required without having to make major changes to the storyline. It could also provide a new generation of gamers with their first opportunity to play an underappreciated entry in the series.

With what we've seen from the trailer so far, it looks like the Resident Evil: Code Veronica Remake is one of the most ambitious endeavors that Capcom has undertaken since all of these remakes started cropping up. Completely altered story, new open-world design, new character development, and overall changed tone of the game – this is a huge departure from the original title in many respects. Only time will tell if all of this was really necessary.
