Rumour: Activision to take over Take Two?

News by Jesse Dolman on  Feb 11, 2011

The reason for Activision to axe True Crime and Guitar Hero might not have anything to do with being able to crap out even more Call of Duty games after all. The latest gossip in the industry suggests that the publisher, led by the beloved Bobby Kotick, may be preparing to take over Take Two Interactive, the publisher of Grand Theft Auto and BioShock, among others.

This is still just a rumour, leaked to MVC by a senior executive. But if true, Activision's position in the global gaming industry would grow to megalomanically huge proportions, considering that games such as World of Warcraft, Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto and BioShock would all be published by the same company.

Such a strong market position would not only be impressive, it would also be downright frightening. Activision is notorious for pulling the plug from underperforming studios, as well as the milking of popular franchises.

It is doubtful, though, that we will actually see an annual BioShock installment or Grand Theft Auto games with regenerating health and respawning enemies, because even if the rumour is true, it is tough to say to what extent Activision will try to influence the creative process at Take Two: They could also just lean back and take their share of the profits.

Activision wouldn't the first big publisher to attempt to acquire Take Two: Fellow industry Behemoth Electronic Arts already tried to do so in 2008, but saw its $2 billion bid being rejected.

Despite the unlikelihood of things getting as far as Activision totally controlling the creative process of games such as BioShock and GTA, there is only one phrase on the lips of many gamers around the world: God help us.
