Sony has been known to bring back many of their old classic titles to their newer consoles, especially through the PlayStation Plus subscription, where players can access what is called The PlayStation Plus Classic Catalog. This catalog is where subscribers are able to access a library filled with PlayStation 1, 2, and 3. Games dating back to 1995, like DOOM and earlier ones like Rogue Galaxy, were released in 2005.
Two titles from Sony have recently been found to have renewed trademarks, The Mark of Kri and Rise of the Kasai. Both of these games were first released on the PS2 in the early 2000s, but unfortunately, being left behind by Sony for many years until now. With the renewal of the trademarks and the games already being on the PlayStation Plus Classic Catalog, it is greatly suggested that they might be getting remakes of their own or possibly a new game.
The Mark of Kri was first developed by San Diego Studio and was released in 2002 for the PS2. This hack-and-slash adventure was pretty well praised overall for its interesting art, which was mainly inspired by Polynesian art. The game did well enough that it got a sequel which is the second title listed above, called Rise of the Kasai, this one having released in 2005. The second title was developed by BottleRocket Entertainment.
After the second game was released, the franchise then disappeared as another game was never developed for it. The information about the trademark renewal comes from the World Intellectual Property Organization, which shows the date as March 11, 2024. Even though the trademarks have been renewed, it doesn’t give any official information on what Sony will do with the franchise from here.
As of right now, both of the titles, The Mark of Kri and Rise of the Kasai, can be downloaded from the Classic Catalog on either a PS4 or a PS5. With the games already being on the platform and having decent graphics this far, it would seem that a remaster isn’t what Sony is looking for by renewing the trademarks, not to say it couldn’t happen.
However, it does seem that maybe Sony is planning a brand new game for the series — a sequel that will feature a new storyline but still be based on the games that came out in the early 2000s. For now, nothing is official other than the renewal of the trademarks. But we’ll keep you updated as on there’s any.
