Sony Officially Closing the Door on PlayStation 2, Ending Customer Service and Repairs

With a lifespan of over 2 decades the PlayStation 2 is heralded as one of the best video game consoles of all time, and for good reason. With a plentiful of acclaimed titles and the inclusion of backward compatibility with PS1 games and a DVD player, the system was renowned by gamers and critics. Now Sony is closing the door on the PlayStation 2, ending console repairs and services on August 31st for Japan.

Reported by Kotaku, even with the date set Sony warns consumers that since parts are limited that parts may be unavailable to repair the console. If you own a PS2 you better start taking care of the system. This marks the final region that offered PS2 customer support.

Sony celebrated recently with the PlayStation console reaching 500 million in sales across all brands with a limited translucent PlayStation 4 Pro that was immediately sold out and now being resold on third-party sites for nearly $1,000 USD.
