Fans have been wondering for years if there will ever be a third season of The Last of Us. It appears that the answer is finally coming to light after waves of whispers, hints, and rumors. Naughty Dog is reportedly preparing to continue the eerie, heartbreaking tale that began more than 10 years ago. Speculation about a new chapter is intensifying as studio co-president Neil Druckmann returns to game development full-time.

But this journey wasn't straightforward—The Last of Us Part 3's road to existence has been paved with cancellations, debates, and shifting priorities within Naughty Dog itself.

The Last of Us Online, The Last of Us, The Last of Us Part III is Closer Than We Thought

Back in February 2024, during the Grounded II: Making The Last of Us Part II documentary, Druckmann revealed that there was "probably one more chapter to this story." He described a concept that excited him as much as the first two games, something familiar yet distinct. The comment instantly set the internet ablaze, giving fans hope that Ellie's world wasn't finished just yet.

However, Druckmann made it clear that the project was still in the concept stage, with another title, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, expected to arrive first. Around the same time, actor Jeffrey Pierce, who voices Tommy, confirmed that The Last of Us Part 3 had no finalized script. These early breadcrumbs were enough to reignite anticipation that Naughty Dog wasn't ready to close the book on its most beloved series.

The story behind Part 3's emergence is tightly intertwined with the fall of The Last of Us Online. After internal debates regarding Naughty Dog's direction, the project which was initially slated to be a significant multiplayer live-service experience—was abandoned. The sources claim that the studio had to decide whether to stick with its storytelling roots in narrative-driven single-player games or move toward a future dominated by online service games.

The team chose the latter, reaffirming its identity and paving the way for single-player adventures like Intergalactic—and inevitably, The Last of Us Part 3.

The cancellation was bittersweet for fans. The multiplayer spin-off was rumored to feature a vast extraction-style world with looting, player combat, and survival mechanics set in the Last of Us universe. But its cancellation freed resources and creative energy for the studio's next story-driven projects. With that decision, attention naturally shifted back to Ellie, Abby, and the fate of this post-pandemic world.

As excitement grew, so did debate. Should Ellie's story even continue? Some fans argued her arc had already reached a poignant end in Part 2, which saw her stripped of everything in her pursuit of revenge. Others wanted closure—an emotional resolution that would bring together Ellie, Abby, and Tommy in one final chapter.

There's also speculation that Naughty Dog could take the Fallout route by exploring new characters in an entirely new location, perhaps with open-world ambitions. Interestingly, early drafts of Part 2 were conceived as an open-world game, suggesting the studio might finally realize that dream with Part 3.

The Last of Us 2, The Last of Us, The Last of Us Part III is Closer Than We Thought

Boundaries have always been pushed by Naughty Dog's creative goals, and Druckmann's recent remarks allude to the studio's changing ethos.

He stated in the middle of 2024 that Naughty Dog would not remain "the Last of Us studio forever," indicating that several projects outside the franchise were in progress.

Yet his statements on sequels remain telling: the studio continues a story only if it finds a theme as profound as love—the emotional core of the first two games. This philosophy suggests that The Last of Us Part 3 won't be made simply because fans demand it, but because the team has something new and meaningful to say.

Despite that cautious stance, mounting evidence suggests Part 3 is already in some stage of development. Multiple reports throughout 2025 indicate that Druckmann has stepped away from HBO's The Last of Us television adaptation following Season 2 to refocus entirely on game creation. Season 2's decline in viewership reportedly down 55% from its first-season finale—may have accelerated his decision.

In his farewell statement, Druckmann confirmed he would now dedicate his energy to Naughty Dog's future titles, including writing and directing Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and mentoring other teams on their projects.

Even more intriguing were subtle teases during The Last of Us Day 2025. The event itself was modest pumpkin stencils, collectible cards, and a bloater statue but Druckmann's Instagram post stole the spotlight. Sharing news about an upcoming script book release, he ended with the line: "Can’t wait to give y’all more The Last of Us updates when the time is right."

Fans immediately took this as confirmation that something larger was in motion. Later interviews reinforced this belief, with Druckmann hinting that "other things" in The Last of Us universe were being developed, though not yet ready for announcement. Meanwhile, the world around Naughty Dog continues to evolve. The former director of Last of Us Online, Vinit Agarwal, announced that he would be relocating to Japan in order to launch a new multiplayer game studio.

According to sources, Shuhei Yoshida of PlayStation even praised the shelved online project, describing it as extremely promising. This demonstrates that the franchise still stimulates original thought and imaginative endeavors beyond Naughty Dog's boundaries.

What does that mean for today's The Last of Us Part 3? The puzzle pieces are coming together, even though the studio has not yet made any official announcements. One obvious direction is indicated by Druckmann's complete return to directing, his frequent teases of upcoming Last of Us episodes, and the cancellation of rival projects. Whether it centers on Ellie, Abby, or an entirely new cast of survivors, the world of The Last of Us is far from finished.

At its heart, this series has always been about love—love that endures through pain, loss, and chaos. Even as Naughty Dog ventures into new creative realms, that poignant theme line appears destined to endure. Although the next chapter seems inevitable, fans may have to wait until the PlayStation 6 era to experience it.

Could The Last of Us really end with just two stories, after all, in a world that doesn't want to die quietly?
