Here's a guide on how to complete Chapter 1 of Yoshi and the Mysterious Book.

The Wildwoods, an abundant and vibrant forest world, is the ideal setting for this entirely new adventure, with unique mechanics, as you enter its pages for the first time. This is a Wildwoods platforming adventure that will require a different approach to the gameplay than what you may be used to from the other games in the series, which are usually high-stakes, precision-based affairs.

The mission here is not just to endure a prolonged barrage of enemies or a countdown timer, but to observe, experiment with and record every component of the local ecosystem patiently, thoroughly and tirelessly. This watercolor look and feel is crammed with interactive features, and you will be able to count on your own knowledge of the subtle sounds and movements that hint at what creatures are doing.

You can get the most out of this opening chapter by taking a calm and patient approach and using a very systematic testing method, and you will be successful in developing the essential observation skills that are essential to mastering the more complicated chapters which follow in the book.

Here is the book that teaches the Scatterpuff Chain Reactions!

A fun and intriguing little creature called the Scatterpuff is one of the earliest and most rewarding puzzles in the Wildwoods, where it can be found in the thickets of dense undergrowth. The Scatterpuff is a dandelion with a large, fuzzy head, which alters the way you handle physical obstacles. If there is ever a solid stone boulder that is in your way so far, that you can't move forward with a regular ground pound, it just won't work out.

You must take care to control your spatial position with respect to the Scatterpuff instead. When you purposely step on or otherwise deal with these fragile creatures, they spread their many seed heads into the air above. The most important strategy for overcoming these boulder fields is to strategically move these floating seeds to eventually plant on top of the boulders themselves.

When the seeds take root properly, they begin a chemical reaction that causes the solid rock to crack, crumble, and ultimately shatter, allowing for wholly new routes to be explored. This particular interaction is done very well to help you learn from the beginning that the animals around you aren't background scenery or something to avoid fighting—if it were, you could simply ignore them—but they are a living part of the world that can be manipulated to your own advantage.

How to use Glubbits and Croakaokes to navigate in vertical space

It gets more vertical as you journey even deeper into the Wildwoods, and you must ingeniously use the wildlife around you to gain elevation. The Glubbit is a somewhat strange frog like creature with a big mouth that is very similar to a bubble wand and will soon become your main source of certain elevation.

It will strategically feed the Glubbit or physically encourage it to begin to create giant, very durable floating bubbles. These bubbles have to be carefully calculated and perfectly timed so that you can safely ride inside or on top of the bubbles and ride smoothly to the previously unreachable ledges of high altitudes.

Precise timing of your first leap and your moment-to-moment spatial awareness is critical here, because you'll bust off the bubble if you land clumsily or you're not in good spatial awareness position throughout the leap, you'll end up back on the forest floor.

The Croakaoke is another native species which is an amazing complement to the floating action of the Glubbit. It's a rather duck-like, squat creature with a big, prominent leaf as a kind of hat and one of the most crucial sound cues in the entire first chapter.

They will always play tunes which have a musical structure, a rhythm and will have a definite melody, making it clear that they are ready to interact with you at this instant. When they sing their unique song through the trees, you can bet that they are great, natural springboards.

When hitting the leafy head of the Croakaoke at the very top of its musical pitch, Yoshi will immediately leap to much higher heights than a normal flutter jump would get it to. Learning to play the exact timing of their songs and synchronizing your acrobatic jumps to capture the rhythmic flow is a key ability to master in order to find the highest and most inaccessible canopies in the Wildwoods where unlikely collectibles may lay.

Managing Flora, Swarms and Environmental Hazards

Many Crazee Dayzees and Bunchabees are also present in the very diverse ecosystem of the first chapter, and are a very different species from one another, and as such must be observed carefully and sustained for safe and effective handling.

Crazee Dayzees are potent, mobile environmental catalysts in the forest. If one of these flower-like creatures is brought close to another dormant plant life scattered around the stage, the surrounding area is instantly and vividly blooming.

The bloom effect is able to easily expose hidden underground avenues, dig up any buried collectibles or simply change the surrounding terrain to provide you with a unique tactical advantage. Thus, it is always a great and rewarding tactical choice to actively choose to carry a Crazee Dayzee on your back when venturing into suspected dead ends.

The Bunchabees are by contrast a more classic, but easily managed, hazard. These are stinging insects with pointed heads, which almost always congregate in dense clusters with an aggressive buzzing flight. These swarms have to be approached in a defensive manner, seeking to outflank and outmaneuver them, rather than in a combative one.

With thrown eggs, you shouldn't waste any time on them, instead you should concentrate totally on your own spatial awareness. Study their looping flight path patiently to find safe gaps, and make good use of the famous flutter jump to get around safely around the swarm's edges.

Every so often, if you feel like having some other specific animals or any throwable item in the speed path of a bunchabee swarm could cause a whole new set of unexpected side effects, and a great return on curiosity, that is when you should try it.

Getting the “Big Discovery” and finishing the “Chapter”

As in every following chapter of the encyclopedia, your ultimate, overriding goal in the Wildwoods will be to successfully complete the major, final interaction that will earn you a maximum of 3 stars and formally complete the habitat.

If you want to make this satisfying ending, you must use all of the fine observational skills and tactical patience you've developed up to now. There is no other way to do it than to experiment with all the creatures you find, one by one until you are completely successful.

Swallow them whole to see if they have different tastes and reactions; toss them at a wide variety of environmental objects to see which ones they hit and how, or just wear them on your back for a while and see what passive benefits you get along the way.

Sometimes the big solution is beautifully complex, in which you throw a freshly-made egg at a very particular animal at a very particular time, just as it's interacting with a distinct aspect of the environment, resulting in a massive, cascading sequence of events that inevitably leads straight to the big discovery.

The underlying logic of the game continually and liberally rewards very methodical and scientific approaches to playing the game. So it should be your goal and mission to leave no stone unturned and no animal untested! When an animal displays unusual behavior in or around water or when it responds abnormally to another species, investigate the anomaly right away.

Spend the time and systematically explore all the possibilities of interaction you have in the lively, dynamic sandbox and you will discover all the deepest secrets of the Wildwoods. This comprehensive strategy ensures you'll confidently and successfully flip the page to the next fantastic entry in the magical encyclopedia, ready for the next set of ecosystems.
