Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & The Secret Hideout DX Guide | How To Get 999 Quality Items Early

Master an early-game alchemy route to reach 999 quality items long before you unlock the Item Duplicator.

In Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & The Secret Hideout DX, high-quality gear can turn the entire game into a relaxed power fantasy. You might be here partly because Ryza is extremely cute, but the real fun is breaking the alchemy system and watching enemies melt in front of over-tuned items.

Normally, the obvious solution is the Item Duplicator. Once that feature unlocks after the second Dragon boss fight, you can duplicate one strong item and then farm as many 999 quality copies as you like. If the goal is raw efficiency, that path is easier.

This route is different. Here, you learn how to reach 999 quality items near the very beginning, before the Hideout and before the Item Duplicator even exist.

You set up a questionable little “illegal” farm of materials right outside your home and twist early-game alchemy into something far stronger than intended. It works, but it demands patience and a bit of grinding.

Reaching The Point Where Alchemy Unlocks

From a fresh save, your first objective is simple: rush through the early story until alchemy becomes available. The beginning can feel slow, but you do not need to defeat everything on the way.

Move through the first areas while ignoring most monsters. You only need to run past them and trigger the main events. You will reach a scene that hints at your future atelier, and Klaudia gets bullied in a cutscene that pushes the story forward.

Shortly after, you face a fight where you are clearly meant to lose. Do not stress over this battle; losing is scripted and part of the story.

After that sequence, you return to the island and finally reach the part of the game that matters for this route. Alchemy unlocks, and the tutorial starts to nag you about touching gathering points and picking up materials.

You can safely mash through most explanations, but pay attention to one thing: from here on, everything you pick up can help push quality higher.

Using The Early Alchemy Tutorial To Stock Up

Once the alchemy tutorial begins, you can finally interact with the world like an alchemist instead of a powerless tourist. Glowing spots on the ground and breakable objects turn into your first source of ingredients.

You are told to gather some basic grass, so grab whatever the tutorial asks for. While doing that, start hitting every crate and barrel you see with your staff. When the game says you can now pick alchemy items, treat every box as free value.

These containers often drop useful materials and can occasionally spit out the early pieces needed for this 999 quality path.

Progress through the story until the secondary missions become available. You do not need to clear all of them; you only care about a specific side task and the access it gives you.

The goal is to reach the first cave area and push far enough that side quests and optional requests open, along with the ability to get Stone Fragments with the right gathering tool. Having these fragments ready will help with crafting and with unlocking recipe-related quests.

Unlocking Zettel In Old Town

Once side quests are open, head into Old Town. This is where the real setup begins. You are looking for one specific person: Pat, the tailor who hands out early alchemy requests. Without Pat, this strategy is impossible.

Completing Pat’s initial questline leads to the Common Paper recipe book, which unlocks the Zettel recipe. Zettel is more than just “paper”; in early alchemy loops, it becomes the backbone of quantity and quality stacking. You need Zettel to take simple threads and cloth, recycle them into higher-quality materials, and then snowball everything towards 999.

Once you obtain the Zettel recipe from Pat in Old Town, you can return to your atelier and start preparing the core materials for the loop.

The Core Materials You Absolutely Need

For this early 999 quality route to work, a few key materials and traits are mandatory. The original idea can be divided into three main pieces, plus a fourth that ties it all together.

First, you must be able to hit the environment hard enough to reveal hidden resources. Give a good smack to every bush and breakable object you see along the early paths.

Bushes, boxes, and other breakables can hide items that later become Scrap Paper or components you can turn into fuel or cloth. Treat every impact as a chance to uncover something that will feed your alchemy loop.

Next, pay a special visit to Klaudia’s home. Around Klaudia’s House, several boxes and crates can be broken. These are your main source of Scrap Paper.

You need as much Scrap Paper as you can carry, because it acts as fuel in recipes and often comes with decent base quality for this stage of the game. Do not leave this area until your basket is stuffed with the stuff.

Finally, go to Fressher’s Shop in the Boden District and check the stock. Look for Red Flower–type ingredients or anything that can be used to synthesize Red Supplement. While you are there, grab some extra Cotton Grass with better quality if you can afford it.

High-quality Cotton Grass will feed directly into Alchemy Fibers, and ultimately into the 999 quality loop. If money is tight, sell items you do not need for this run. This is a dedicated setup path, so anything off-route is just funding for better raw materials.

Setting Up Red Supplements With Strong Fire Element

When all key materials are ready, it is time to prepare your supplements. Your immediate goal is to create at least eight Red Supplements that carry strong fire element. Aim for Red Supplements with three fire element nodes filled.

In a misheard form, this was called “strength three”; here it simply means a Red Supplement powerful enough to boost the quality of anything that relies on fire element in its recipe.

Use the best fire-aligned flowers and fuels you have. Focus more on hitting the elemental value than on optimizing every minor trait at this stage. As long as those Red Supplements have solid fire output and decent quality, they can serve as the backbone for the rest of the process.

Crafting Alchemy Fibers And Zettel For The 999 Loop

With Scrap Paper, Cotton Grass, Red Supplements, and the Zettel recipe unlocked, the real alchemy work begins. The idea is simple but powerful: you use Alchemy Fibers, Natural Cloth, and Zettel to keep feeding quality forward until items hit 999.

Start by synthesizing Alchemy Fibers using Cotton Grass as the plant component and Scrap Paper as fuel wherever that fits naturally into the recipe.

Slot your high-quality traits and your best Red Supplements into the loops that boost overall quality. Do not waste slots on effects that do not directly raise the number on the right side of the screen; everything in this route serves quality first.

Once you have solid Alchemy Fibers, move into the recipes that convert them into cloth. Turn those fibers into Natural Cloth whenever possible, again pushing quality upwards. When Natural Cloth looks strong, feed it into Zettel.

This is where Zettel shines. With the right loops unlocked, Zettel can carry traits like synthesis quantity boosts, letting you multiply good materials instead of starting from scratch each time.

Then, loop back. Use Zettel and Natural Cloth to create even better Alchemy Fibers. Feed those into new cloth and better Zettel again.

Each pass raises your ceiling. Eventually, the quality number starts creeping toward 999. At some point, every Alchemy Fibers, Natural Cloth, and Zettel you craft will hit that cap.

Even if the exact button presses were once explained over “blah blah blah” during the tutorial, the structure here is easy to follow: fibers into cloth, cloth into Zettel, then Zettel and high-element Red Supplements back into fibers. Repeat the cycle until everything reaches 999.

How Long This Takes And Whether It Is Worth It

This method works, but it is not fast. In practice, expect something around an hour and twenty minutes of focused play from the moment you start committing to this route until you see your first batch of 999 quality items. The original run that inspired this idea took roughly that long from one early save point to another.

It is absolutely possible to reach 999 quality before reaching the early major story milestones or the Hideout. You can stand in front of late-early-game enemies while waving items that should not exist yet. In terms of pure power fantasy, it feels great.

However, it is also fair to admit that this route is rarely worth it for a normal playthrough. By playing the game at a regular pace, you eventually get access to many tools that make farming and crafting easier: more recipes, better traits, the Item Duplicator, and extra systems that push quality up with less manual effort.

Once those unlock, your gentle collection of supports turns your atelier into a real farm with far less strain.

So think of this early 999 quality guide as a challenge run and a learning tool. It teaches how Scrap Paper, Cotton Grass, Red Supplement, Alchemy Fibers, Natural Cloth, and Zettel all chain together, and how you can bend alchemy systems long before the game expects it.

After finishing the loop and setting up a wall of 999 quality items, you can relax, enjoy the story again, and maybe spend some cozy time with Lila and the rest of the cast instead of grinding even more.
