Games Best Played Drunk

We all do it – well those of us of legal drinking age; invite some friends around, have a few drinks and then break out the console to get our video game on. There are however only certain games that work under the influence without completely destroying your save progress or online statistics. Here is a list of the perfect alcoholic accompaniments for a night of fun and frolics.

Buzz!: Quiz World (2009)
We start our list with the Buzz! Series, which of course is fun whether you’re drunk or sober, but with a lager or two down you those facts that you usually wouldn’t think twice about tend to drop from your memory bank and it suddenly becomes just as much a battle with yourself as it is with your friends. If you’re not in the mood for such intense trivia there’s always Buzz! The Music Quiz as an alternative that allows for custom photos and buzzer noises to be added for comedic purposes.

LittleBigPlanet 2 (2011)
With so many options at your fingertips in the latest Media Molecule offering it’s the perfect chance whilst having a beverage to get those creative juices flowing and construct some offbeat levels for you and your friends to navigate. Four controllers at the ready and watch the fun ensue as you all try to manically traverse up, over and across the terrain to reach the finish line first. The winner getting to pick a dare for an opposing player is always a good incentive.

Worms 2: Armageddon (2009)
You’ll be hard-pressed to find anyone who doesn’t love a good ole bash at Worms, and with your own custom setups, such as Ninjas Ropes and Mines only it can develop into mass hysteria. It also requires just one controller if you lack the funds as it’s a turn-based affair. The game is definitely suited to a more casual drinking scenario and out of all the games listed here it’s probably the one I’ve invested the most time into destroying both friends and family at.

Mario Party 9 (2012)
While Mario Party 9 as a standalone game is pretty average, with nothing particularly standing out and a ‘been there, done that’ feel to it, there’s no doubting its drinking game potential. You lose a round and you take a sip, or shot, and then you move on. It’s also one of those games that is super easy to get into - male or female - whether video games are your bag or not, and from personal experience I know how competitive it can get in the heat of the moment with many a rivalry to be had.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl (2008)
I wouldn’t normally recommend fighting games as a side dish to drinking, especially if who you’re drinking with people who vary in skill level, as it can be a one-sided tanking. However, the Super Smash Bros. series is so much more than just a fighting game and has all the ingredients to indulge everyone’s abilities and tastes. There’s no greater feeling than teaming up on a guy who clearly thinks he’s better than everyone else by smashing him clean off the screen.

The Beatles: Rock Band (2009)
The market for instrument-based rhythm games might have saturated a few years back but with alcohol involved your inhibitions tend to go out of the window and a good sing-a-long starts to look like a pretty good idea. There are of course many titles to choose from but I always find The Beatles: Rock Band works best, having so many recognizable songs from such a universally loved band at your disposal. Some of my best experiences have come from rocking it out with friends in three-part vocal harmonies.
