What GTA 6 Means for the Rest of the Gaming World
Rockstar's next big release could revive consoles and redefine the industry.

It's no secret anymore! GTA 6 is set to be the single biggest game release of all time. Every generation has a handful of cultural milestones that shake up the industry, and GTA 6 is no doubt one of them. But beyond hype and excitement, for the game itself, the bigger question we need to ask is: what will GTA 6 do for the rest of the gaming world?
A new report might have just given us that answer, and if it proves right, GTA 6 won't just dominate the charts, but it could literally change the way people buy consoles. According to new research, GTA 6 is expected to kickstart console sales at a time when the hardware market is seeing some downturn.

Over the last few years, the video game industry has seen its fair share of struggles. Console sales have stalled, and mass layoffs continue to hit studios. GTA 5 and GTA Online are perfect examples of old-gen games that just refuse to die out. There's a lack of freshness in the industry.
That's where GTA 6 comes in. Market research firm Newzoo just released their 2025 games market report, and the findings were eye-opening. They found that consoles have been the slowest-growing platform so far this year, inching ahead with 2.5% growth compared to the much stronger numbers from mobile and PC.
The studio also predicts that 2026 won't be much different, with consoles continuing to lag behind. But GTA 6 could turn the tide back in console gaming's favor. The new GTA title will trigger a surge of upgrades, with players who've been holding out on buying a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S finally deciding it's time to make the jump. GTA 6 will be exclusive to the current generation of consoles, meaning anyone who's been coasting on a PS4 or Xbox One won't be able to play unless they upgrade.
For years, gamers have had little incentive to switch hardware. After all, they could still play heavy-hitters like GTA 5, RDR2, and even the top-selling titles of 2025 on these old consoles. Why shell out hundreds of dollars for a shiny new console when the same games run fine on the old one? That logic has kept millions from pulling the trigger.
But now, though, with GTA 6 coming out, you no longer get to make that choice. The ball's back in the industry's court. Michelle Bozeman, a market analyst, went so far as to call GTA 6 a key theme for the entire industry this year. She believes it won't just boost consoles but will also reshape the competitive landscape between PC, console, and cross-platform games.
And that's exactly what other companies are counting on. The idea is simple: if GTA 6 pushes millions to buy a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, those same gamers won't stop at just one title. They'll be far more likely to grab other games. It's the classic "rising tide lifts all boats" effect. Publishers everywhere are hoping they can climb aboard Rockstar's hype train.

Will GTA 6 really be the savior of the gaming industry? For many, the answer feels obvious. Blockbuster releases like this don't come around often. At best, you might see one per decade. GTA 6 most likely will dominate the next decade, just like GTA 5 did.
A list of the top 20 best-selling PlayStation games of all time, going back to 1995, was just made public by Circana. It's not unexpected that Rockstar's repertoire is at the top. GTA 5 is the best-selling game in terms of both money and units sold, with RDR2 close behind. There are also classic games on the list, such as Vice City and San Andreas.
What makes this list especially interesting is that nearly all of those top-selling titles can still be played on older systems. Whether it's PS4 or Xbox One, gamers haven't been locked out of enjoying the biggest hits of the last decade. The only future outlier is GTA 6, which will break the cycle by being exclusive to new-gen consoles.
There is, however, one big catch. Rockstar still hasn't confirmed the official release date. Currently, the expectation is May 26, 2026, but given Rockstar's history of delays, skepticism is understandable. Many of us are prepared for the possibility that the game could be pushed back further.
Then there's the issue of pricing. The last time Rockstar released a new title, it was priced at $60. But the market has shifted since then, and $70 games have become the new standard. Some analysts believe GTA 6 might push even further, possibly costing even $100. That price jump could give some players pause, making them wait until the game eventually goes on sale.
Beyond GTA 6 itself, Rockstar has other cards they might play in the meantime. Rumors suggest RDR2 could get a current-gen update for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. On top of that, whispers about a remake or remaster of GTA 4 have been circulating. While those releases wouldn't carry the same weight as GTA 6, they could still help maintain interest and momentum.

Meanwhile, Rockstar continues to support GTA Online and Red Dead Online with smaller updates, bonuses, and sales. Fans are expecting one last big DLC blowout for GTA Online before the company shifts focus entirely to GTA 6. For now, though, things feel relatively quiet.
The excitement is undeniable. Whether or not it ends up reshaping the industry as dramatically as it's being predicted, we don't know. GTA 6 is already creating waves years before its launch. If it does release on schedule, it'll be a milestone moment that redefines what video games can do for the entire market.
One thing that you can bank on, regardless of the drama and the speculations, is that when Rockstar finally drops this game, the gaming world will never be the same again.
