Leon is one of the earlier mini-bosses that you’ll probably run into in Traverse Town. For an early boss, he can be pretty punishing, especially if you are unable to keep up with his movement.

Although the fight is an optional win, it's worth putting in the effort to go over, as you’ll be rewarded with an Elixir, which can come in handy later on. This guide will explain how.

As mentioned before, Leon tends to be on the faster side; his sword combination can be fast and lethal, making getting hits tricky. To best approach the fight, you’ll want to constantly think about being on the move. This is important as he can be really punishing to those who stand still or are too close to him for too long.

Leon’s primary attack has him do a double-swing combination with his sword; to get around it, circle around him whilst also maintaining a safe distance. After he does his second slash, there will be a window of opportunity where you’ll be able to land in a few hits.

It’s essential that you don’t get carried away and spam combos, as that is when most people get punished by Leon’s quick counters.

For this tertiary attack, Leon jumps across the entire battlefield in a wide arc. This move is also his Achilles heel, as he takes a while to recover from it, allowing you another opportunity to land hits.

Like before, it’s important that you remember not to get carried away and land in two hits, then retreat back so that you don’t get punished.

Another attack that Leon does is his fireball attack, which can be deadly if not managed properly. You’ll be able to dodge them, but it’s best that you reflect them back; a single good connection can potentially stun Leon.

If a fireball attack is reflected successfully, you’ll finally be able to unleash full combination attacks without having to worry about the consequences. Lastly, before committing to attacks, it’s best to jump beforehand, as this can give you breathing room to avoid Leon’s following attacks.

To reliably take on Leon, you’ll want to take a cautious approach, encircle him, and keep him at range throughout the fight; make sure to utilize the fireball phase to create larger openings for maximum damage opportunity.
