The Role of Patch Updates in Dota 2 Esports: How Game Changes Affect Team Strategies
Opinion by Nestee Shy on Sep 18, 2024
Patches are an essential part of gaming and, therefore, a key part of the eSports ecosystem. Patches refer to changes to the game made by developers after the game has already been released. It can range from small changes, such as fixing bugs, to a complete overhaul of the game with the addition of new features and gameplay options.
Since patches are often made in response to how a game is used by players – in terms of addressing the issues they are facing or mixing the gameplay up to avoid certain strategies – it has a huge impact on Dota 2 players.

Balancing the Metagame
One of the main reasons any game has patches is to do what's called balancing the Dota metagame in developer lingo. That means that no single strategy, character, or tactic dominates the competitive scene for too long.
After the players have tried and learned how to play a game, such strategies and tactics begin to emerge, and the developers need to address that.
Many games also tweak the character's ability with a new patch so that no character is overpowered, thus making the game unbalanced for other players.
Roshan
Roshan changed a lot during the last update, and so have the lairs around it. There's no more Rosh pit in the center of the map. Instead, there are two smaller pits next to the portals. Roshan has also increased damage and armor.
Upon killing Roshan for a second time, the cheese will be dropped, and killing him again will reward either Aghanim's Scepter (Radiant) or Refresher Shard (Dire).
Tormentors
Tormentors are a new addition to the map. They don't move, and they don't have the ability to attack. Instead, they reflect 70% of the damage taken by heroes in a specific radius.
When a Tormentor dies, Aghanim's Shard is given to a random player with the lowest net worth. If everybody on the team already has a Shard, everybody on the team gets 280 gold and experience instead.
Tormentors only have one health point, but can't be damaged while they are under a barrier. Killing a Tormentor also comes with a 250-gold bounty.
New Runes
The game now has two more runes. This Shield Rune creates a barrier that lasts for 75 seconds and possesses half as much HP as the hero's maximum health does. Wisdom Rune appears on the edges of the map every seventh minute after seven o'clock, activating, and players gain an experience bonus of 280 xPM for every seven minutes since the starting time of a game.
Wisdom runes spawn near your base. For the Radiant team, the Wisdom runes are near the top lane. For the Dire team, Wisdom runes are near the bottom lane.
How it affects the eSports Strategy
All of the new additions and changes to the game that come with a patch update have an effect on how eSports teams play the game. A larger map means that the team will have to create new strategies and have more synergy among the team members.
New mechanics, such as the ones we mentioned above, are also made to increase collaboration and make the game even more of a team effort. The overall goal of the latest patches is to put emphasis on working together rather than on a single extraordinary player changing the outcome of the game.
Downsides of New Patches
There are also downsides that come with the introduction of new patches. In general, the biggest complaint from experts and fans alike is that with each new patch, the game becomes more complex and turns away new players. The barrier to entry into Dota 2, especially at a professional level, is becoming ever higher.
Final Thoughts
In conclusion, patch updates play a crucial role in shaping the strategies used by Dota 2 teams in eSports. The constant changes, like map expansions and new mechanics, force teams to adapt and work more cohesively.
While these updates keep the game dynamic and balanced, they also introduce challenges, especially for new players and teams adjusting to the changes.
