PlayStation 5 Pro represents the latest evolution in Sony’s flagship console lineup, positioned between the original PlayStation 5 and the more compact PlayStation 5 Slim. With an updated chassis design, enhanced cooling solution, and a notable boost in raw performance, it aims to deliver smoother 4K gameplay and improved fidelity.

Design Comparison
When viewed side-by-side, the original PlayStation 5 remains the largest, featuring single-panel side covers. The PlayStation 5 Pro adopts a more aggressive look with three fin side grills that convey a sports car style aesthetic, while the PlayStation 5 Slim is the most compact. The Pro’s revised logo placement stands out prominently against the matte white shell.
Although it omits a dedicated bottom stand, Sony includes a flat feet accessory that can be slotted under the side fins to lay the unit horizontally, achieving a sleek presentation in any entertainment center.
Ports and Connectivity
All three consoles share the same rear-panel layout: one HDMI output, two USB Type-A ports, one LAN port, and the power connector. The Pro’s front interface mirrors the Slim’s, offering two USB Type C ports alongside the power and eject buttons.
This standardized arrangement ensures that your existing accessories and cables remain fully compatible across the lineup.
Storage and Controller Bundle
The PlayStation 5 Pro comes with a regular DualSense wireless controller. Storage has been upgraded to 2 TB of internal SSD space, doubling the capacity found in both the original and Slim models.
This added headroom means fewer manual uninstalls when rotating through large game libraries.
Performance Enhancements
Under the hood, the Pro delivers 16.7 TFLOPS of GPU throughput—up from 10.23 TFLOPS on the base PlayStation 5—and an additional 2 GB of DDR5 RAM. In theory, these gains translate to more stable 4K 60 fps experiences and the potential for 4K 120 fps optimized titles.
Sony’s official stance is that you can expect constant 4K 60 fps performance across supported games, with occasional 4K 120 fps output in select scenes.
Real World Gaming Experience
We tested God of War: Ragnarök in its Pro-enhanced mode, and it delivered locked 4K 60 fps with the expected visual fidelity boost over the base hardware. Gameplay remained rock solid, showcasing the Pro’s ability to sustain high frame rates without compromising detail.
In Marvel's Spider-Man 2, the performance mode on the Pro produced slightly cleaner edge rendering and reduced character pixelation; although these improvements are subtle, they do contribute to an overall crisper image during fast-paced action.
The Pro demonstrated its capacity to provide constant performance even when dynamic lighting and particle effects are at their peak in NBA 2025 by maintaining a steady frame rate and brilliant player models.
Despite these gains, most titles today leverage only a small fraction of the Pro’s extra horsepower, meaning that visual and performance differences often require side-by-side comparison to appreciate fully.
Drive and Accessory Compatibility
The PlayStation 5 Pro is available only in a digital only configuration. Owners of the Slim’s Blu-ray drive can transplant that module into the Pro chassis without modification, as the drive bay and removable panels are interchangeable.
If you own the Slim’s optical unit, you won’t need to purchase a separate disc drive for the Pro.
Should You Upgrade?
If you already own a PlayStation 5 or Slim, you’ll continue to enjoy your favorite titles with no major drawbacks; the Pro delivers incremental gains that many players won’t perceive in day-to-day play. However, if you haven’t yet joined the PS5 ecosystem, the Pro offers the most future-proof entry point, especially if bundled deals include the limited edition 30th Anniversary model and a Pro Controller.
Ultimately, unless you’re chasing every last frame of performance, sticking with your existing console may be the more cost-effective choice.
