Start the Party! was an augmented reality party game made specifically to utilize the PlayStation Move. The game was basically just a variety of mini-games using the PlayStation Move controllers and the PlayStation Eye. Unfortunately, after its release on September 17, 2010, the game received very mixed reviews. But the market for PlayStation 3 Move games has been limited.
Sony announced intentions to release a second game in the franchise at GamesCom 2011 along with several other Move compatible games being released, Start the Party! Save the World. The trailer depicts the same type of gameplay as the previous title, with players having the ability to see themselves in the game as well as watch their PlayStation Move transform into “crazy gadgets”.
The story of Start the Party! Save the World is a bit primitive. The mini-games are all tailored around saving the world from an evil scientist named Dr. Terrible. Players will work together to complete 20 mini-games. Level environments range from underwater, cityscapes and outer space. The mini-games are brighter and more vivid than ever with the ability to pick it up the rhythm up them in mere seconds.
Unlike the first Start the Party!, players have to option to control machinery by appearing inside of it and tilting the Move controller a certain way. They may appear inside a helicopter which they then have to use to pick up items and drop them off. The PlayStation Eye is crucial as it adds much more character to the game. Players will love to watch themselves as they appear in a cartoon post-apocalyptic robot. Players can also appear in the background making Start the Party! Save the World is fun for the entire family.
There are two modes to single-player. There is the principle “free play” which allows players to try all mini-games and work on getting on the leaderboard and the “Survivor Challenges” where players compete against the clock and mini-games change from one to the other at a distressing rate and players can earn more time by scoring more points. But Start the Party! Save the World’s appeal is in the party game genre and this game will really shine in the multi-player aspect.
Another new aspect of this sequel is that players can choose two types of ways to play multiplayer; one where they can pass the Move controller to each other, and another where one player uses the Move controller and another uses a Dual Shock. One player can use the Dual Shock controller to simply annoy another player and make things more difficult. The second player can control an enemy from each of the levels and try to bring the main player down.
There is also two modes multi-player in to Start the Party! Save the World. The fast paced “Quick Fire Mode” which allows players to rush through selected mini-games before passing the Move comptroller to another player. The player to score the highest points is the winner. There is also “Party Mode” which is essentially the same thing but offers more customizable gameplay.
The charm of Start the Party! Save the World is clearly the party aspect which is a limited market. If players have friends and family that come to visit often, Start the Party! Save the World seems like a perfect purchase. But in order for the multiplayer to work, players must be together on the same couch which could limit quite a bit of the PlayStation demographic. Original Start the Party! players will most likely flock to this game as it is just more of what they love with better technology.
