Every new Soulslike release delivers an exhilarating sense of discovery, yet adapting to an unfamiliar combat system can feel like fighting a boss unarmed. Wuchang: Fallen Feathers introduces a distinct rhythm and mechanics that may seem daunting at first.

This guide breaks down every critical part of getting ready for and fighting a battle so that you can go into it with confidence and understanding.

Whether this is your first time playing a Souls-like game or you've been playing for years, you will learn how to properly equip your characters, level up strategically, and master the subtleties of battle so you can easily defeat your enemies.

Equipment Breakdown

Learn your way around the Equipment screen in the game's menu before going into battle. This is where you can change your build as you go around the world.

You won't have many items in your collection at the beginning of the game, but soon you'll be able to choose from the Long Sword, the Axe, the Dual Blades, the Spear, and the One-Handed Sword. Each has its own set of moves and skill tree.

You may equip two weapons simultaneously and later upgrade them to synergize.

When you get a new weapon, look at the scaling options on the right side of the weapons screen. They are from 1 to 6 and show how the weapon's power changes based on your stats (E = 1, S = 6). Next, pick protection that goes well with your build.

Unlike many Soulslikes, armor weight carries no penalty in Wuchang, allowing you to prioritize defense or style without compromise.

To apply alternate skins, press the alternate equipment button while hovering over a piece and select any other armour skin you have unlocked.

Below your armor slots, interchangeable Jade Pendants provide flat bonuses or situational enhancements. You will also encounter spells with various affinities, unlocked through boss battles and optional content.

Casting spells consumes Skyborn Might, gained primarily by executing perfect dodges.

Finally, the consumable bar at the bottom holds your Health Flask and other items such as status resistances, throwable weapons, and the tempering item that grants temporary weapon enhancements.

Powering Up at the Shrines

True advancement occurs at shrines, beginning with the Impetus Repository, where you spend Red Mercury Essence to level up and unlock skills. Early investment in the utility branch accelerates access to powerful weapons and increases flask efficiency.

Once you commit to specific weapons, pursue their mastery branches using Red Mercury Essence and Red Feathers—the latter dropped by elite enemies with glowing red eyes or rare monsters like jar demons. Skill resets carry no penalty, so experiment at will.

Rare Benediction Stones—Oath, Memory, and Wisdom—slot into equipped weapons to grant bonuses similar to Jade Pendants. These stones are active only when their assigned weapon is equipped and may be swapped freely at shrines.

After defeating Master Raider, you gain access to weapon tempering. Equip the tempering consumable on your bar and visit the temperance menu to insert Acupoint Needles.

As you play, you will unlock more needles, such as the Yangchi Needle for fire burn, as well as others for freezing, lightning, poise break, and more. When you temper your weapon, it makes it much more powerful, which makes it very useful for fighting bosses.

Leveling Up Your Combat Experience

Combat in Wuchang emphasizes defense and precision over relentless offense. Dodging serves as the most reliable method to avoid damage and reposition. Perfect dodges, or Shimmers, grant charges of Skyborn Might, essential for unleashing skills.

Some weapons offer Blocks and Deflect, while specific builds benefit from Alacrity (for spellcasting) and Clash (for melee), which mitigate damage during offensive actions. Monitor weapon descriptions and the Impetus Repository nodes to identify these traits.

Generating and managing Skyborn Might underpins every play style. Besides perfect dodges, performing combos and consuming Plume Branches yields additional charges.

Spend these to perform Swift Draws for instant weapon swaps with an attack or Swift Strikes to eliminate wind-up on weapon skills—crucial during narrow punish windows.

Each weapon boasts two skills: one innate and one customizable via Discipline Skills learned in its skill tree, enabling offense, defense, or hybrid approaches.

Breaking a foe's posture delivers massive damage, but many bosses evade aggressively. Focus on defensive play to capitalize on limited punish windows rather than chasing after retreating enemies.

World content often rewards stealth and environmental tactics—plunge attacks, explosive barrels, or ambushes—to thin enemy ranks and farm resources like Red Mercury Essence.

Master these techniques to gain an edge before challenging the most formidable adversaries.

Now that you know this, you can start getting good at fighting in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers. To win, work on your timing, improve your build, and get used to the unique rhythm of the fight.
