Xbox Ally X brings console-like capabilities to a handheld form factor. Still, it does not qualify as a full Xbox system. With the right adjustments, however, the experience can be refined to feel significantly closer to that of an actual Xbox.

A combination of optimized settings, thoughtful configuration in Armoury Crate, and a few interface tweaks can transform the device into a more seamless, console-like gaming environment.

Improving Authentication and User Access

We recommend setting up an additional fingerprint for Windows Hello to make waking the Ally from sleep faster and more reliable. Using the right thumb tends to feel natural and has a higher recognition success rate.

To set this up, you can open the Xbox menu, navigate to settings, select more settings, open Windows settings, go to accounts, scroll to sign-in options, and add whichever finger you prefer by following the on-screen instructions.

Optimizing Armoury Crate for a Console-Like Experience

If you go to the general tab in Armoury Crate, you can set the rapid launch choice to Xbox. This way, when you press the library button, the Xbox library will open instead of the Armoury Crate library. If you turn off automatic launching of Armoury Crate, the complete app won't open over the Xbox full-screen experience when you start up.

In Performance and Eco Assist, leaving extreme standby mode and moderate standby assist on provides smoother sleep and wake states due to improvements in Windows for Ally devices or recent BIOS and Armoury Crate updates.

CPU boost should remain off in most cases since it drains the battery faster without consistently improving performance. Enabling the option to let the Ally run when the screen is off is only useful for large downloads or installations, and it works only while plugged in, so it should be disabled during normal use.

Configuring GPU Settings for Balanced Performance

With 8GB allocated to the GPU, it is best to leave this setting unchanged since assigning more VRAM reduces your overall usable system memory. In the AMD graphics section, we recommend turning off all options except Radeon Anti-Lag and Radeon Image Sharpening. Since these are driver-level controls that activate across all games, leaving the others enabled may degrade image quality.

Battery care can remain off if docking is not part of your regular routine. For those who leave the Ally plugged in for extended periods, enabling battery care ensures that charging bypasses power once the battery reaches 80%. Instant full-charge mode temporarily overrides this limit until the device reaches 100%.

Using the Command Center More Efficiently

Opening the Armoury Crate button reveals toggles that serve as shortcuts to many of the settings you have configured. Core controls such as control mode, resolution, and refresh rate should remain easily accessible.

You can customize the additional controls to suit your usage preferences, including options like image sharpening or RSR.

Docking the Ally for an Improved TV or Monitor Experience

Docked Ally gameplay on a 4K television is generally limited, especially for AAA titles. Using cloud gaming services like Nvidia GeForce Now or sticking to indie games that run at higher resolutions will improve your performance.

When you plug in an external controller, the Ally automatically turns off its built-in controller. You may modify this, but it's best to leave it off so platforms like Steam can recognize the correct controller.

In Armoury Crate's performance tab, enabling manual operating mode and setting all sliders to maximum allow the Ally to reach peak performance. CPU boost can be enabled here since battery usage is no longer a concern. Battery care mode should be turned on to reduce heat and maintain long-term battery health.

If using an HDR-capable display, you can open the Xbox button menu, go to settings, select more settings, choose gaming features, and enable HDR for supported games. This provides enhanced contrast, even though the Ally's built-in screen does not support HDR.

Improving Aesthetics and Navigation in Xbox Game Bar

Compact mode should remain enabled to prevent the Game Bar from switching to the desktop version, which produces cluttered windows that are difficult to manage.

Installing Steam Grid DB from the widget store provides access to improved game cover art, enhancing the visual quality of your library, particularly non-Xbox titles.

Achieving Better Battery Life and Performance

Performance mode is still the best choice overall, especially on Ally X, instead of turbo mode. Turbo mode can add 5-10 FPS. Still, you can get more frames and longer battery life while keeping the picture clear by setting games to 900p with Radeon Image Sharpening enabled.

Quiet mode works well for 2D or indie games because it stays just below the 15W sweet spot. Turbo mode should only be used near a power source.

Certain games include custom profiles that automatically apply efficient power tuning through the command center. These do not adjust in-game graphics settings but can be helpful if you prefer not to tweak power configurations yourself.

Some Xbox Store titles now include handheld performance ratings with handheld-specific graphics presets, which we highly recommend using. In general, using performance mode with handheld graphics settings at 900p and RSR enabled yields consistent results across a wide range of titles.

Final Thoughts

After a lot of testing, it looks like the combination of handheld performance settings, performance mode, and 900p resolution with image sharpening works well for most games.

You can change things to fit your tastes, but this configuration makes sure the game runs well, looks beautiful, and lasts a long time.
