Steam Machine Supply Could Avoid Controller Issues

Steam Machine stock expectations depend on shipment volume, reservation systems, and pricing before launch availability stabilizes.

Things are going very quickly in Steam right now. The release date is being touted as soon as next week. Shipments are underway, but one major issue is not receiving much attention amid discussions of price and release dates. The topic is stocks. We now have enough information from recent shipment leaks.

Steam Controller and Steam Deck have been sold, making it fairly confident that we can estimate how many of these Steam Machines might exist and whether they'll even be available for purchase. Valve just released a Steam Controller update about reservations. Back when Steam Controller first emerged, Valve just offered it for sale. It was sold out about half an hour after its release. Valve soon learned that wasn't going to work, and switched to a reservation system.

The Steam Controller Reservations Reveal Demand Problems!

This is because it enables the customer to book a controller, and an email will be sent to them when it is their turn. There are about 3 days for the buyers to finish the deal. Initial demand was surprisingly high, so the company had to queue reservations. Valve also announced that it will not end Steam Controller sales, though actual delivery dates would have to be adjusted.

Estimated windows are now displayed on reservation pages (3 new ones are added). Orders are anticipated through September 2026 and December 2026, and are likely to continue into 2027. Those estimates suggest two things: First, there is a lack of inventory. Secondly, Valve is facing the challenge of meeting demand.

The Steam Machine's Launch Seems Imminent

It appears that Steam Machine will use the same reservation system. According to leaks, the release date could fall between June 23 and June 30. The review embargo is reportedly set to end on June 23, right after Steam Next Fest. This aligns with past Valve products. The recent shipments indicate that hardware preparation is in the right direction.

On June 10, 42 packages of roughly 6.4 tons were delivered to Valve. On June 17, another shipment of 42 packages was received, along with five additional deliveries. Three of those weighed around 6.4 tons, and the other two weighed around 12.5 tons. All the shipments together equal almost 70 tons of hardware.

The weight comparison with imports spotted in May suggests these deliveries might be Steam Machines. Valve appears to be factoring Steam Controller sales data into Steam Machine pricing. The company could ramp up hardware shipments after realizing the rate at which controllers were selling. It is alleged that there are four SKUs for the Steam Machine.

There are models with and without a controller, as well as 512G and 2 TB models. Some controller inventories may be reserved for bundles, as these packages require controllers. Whether Valve will split inventory is undecided, as is whether controller shortages will limit bundle availability.

Why Stock Might Be Better Than Expected

But when Valve is already having trouble making enough Steam Controllers, it raises the question of whether they can make enough more Steam Machines and whether they have enough RAM, storage, and components. But several factors could lead to better stock performance this time. At $99, the Steam Controller becomes much more affordable, making it easier to justify buying one. The lower the Price, the more consumers will want it.

The controller is also applicable to several different scenarios. Those already running PCs might need another controller. Anyone who has bought a Steam Deck can connect it to their TV and use the Steam Controller as their handheld. There are far more potential buyers. Steam Machine falls into a lesser class. Paying $1000 or more for a mini PC is a much greater commitment. Therefore, while the first batch might sell out, things might gradually improve over time, as Steam Deck stock did.

While scalpers remain a concern, Valve now has more experience in this area through its reservation systems. Priority might be given to accounts with longer histories, more games, or higher levels of spending activity. It may also have a cap on purchases per customer. The price of a specific good or service affects its demand.

Steam Machine still has a chance of retailing for under 1000 dollars.

There is a lot of talk about $800. But if prices become more competitive, demand may rise, making it more difficult to obtain the goods. For many buyers, especially as hardware prices continue to creep up and the economy turns sour, it can be hard to part with more than 1,200 dollars on hardware. It's also expected to continue to be compared to traditional consoles due to the product's marketing.

While the Steam Machine is quite different, some consumers might be deterred by those comparisons. The mini PC provides a more open platform, and console is console. Even so, it's probably impossible to avoid comparisons. The stock issues could run out of steam after launch, though. Currently, the Steam Controller is experiencing issues: the Steam community is unable to order it, and the reservation window has been extended until 2027.

Steam Deck launch was also affected by shortages, which eventually leveled off. Steam Machine will be more expensive and have a smaller customer base, so it's unlikely to be available as quickly as the Steam Controller. Should the system be launched at $800, demand might be reasonable and not warrant any year-long reservation delays.
