The College Life

By DeltaX, Posted 25 Sep 2010

Well, I've finally settled in to college now. Met most of the people in my dorm hall, and they all seem to be pretty nice people. Still have that odd weird feeling that I don't fit in, though... it seems that I don't particularly fit into any group of people due to my eccentric tastes and unusual physical appearance. It's like you can *talk* to them, but you don't really *know* them, and it is very, very awkward when they try to talk to you. You can feel the out-of-place-ness in the air.

Anyways, the internet speed here is beyond amazing. I downloaded a few GBs worth of data in less than five minutes. That is LOADS better than what I had back at home. The food here also isn't bad. I think I've gotten addicted to Panda Express because that's what I've been eating for lunch for the past few days. Orange chicken and honey-walnut shrimp. Yum.

Classes are pretty average. I'm fine with most of them, save one: my math class. The teacher appears to be of foreign descent, and his accent is horrid. On top of that, my brother and all my friends are taking another math class, so I'm the only one stuck in that class. It'll buff out next quarter since the class I'm taking is an advanced program from bad math users to straighten us out and send us directly in the 2nd quarter math class with everyone else, so I'll be able to join them next quarter.

The gaming computer lounge is actually pretty nice, it's mostly loaded with Steam games, League of Legends, Starcraft 2, and WoW. Apart from some dick-pricks who like trolling in L4D by shooting teammates (and did I mention they seem like assholes? Yeah.), most of the people who play there are pretty good-natured. I had the luck to run into a Diamond league player for Starcraft 2 that played as Protoss and actually watched him play first-hand, which was a great learning experience. It's pretty crazy, watching Diamond-league'rs fight for the only single gold expansion on the map.

Speaking of Starcraft 2, I've only just started to advance through my practice matches. All have been wins so far, due to my higher than average APM compared to the starting user, and always communicating with my teammate at the beginning of every round. It's all fun and games. By the way, if any one of you guys plays on US West, please add me. I'm Fedaykin, character code 579. :) I'm always open to games! Not particularly 1v1, since I don't like being alone, so I usually run 2v2. But if you need a sparring partner or anything for 1v1, I'm up for it.

  • Sounds like you are having decent time out there in that new place. You didn't mention which college and area though.

  • Ow, don't worry about it, you'll fit in quite well, eventually. All it takes is a little time and some drinks :P But, it sounds you're having fun already. :D

    BTW: What are you studying?

    Posted Sep 28, 2010

  • After one or two semesters you will fit in well. Where is your college? Unless you got to China, all colleges should be fun to be.

  • @Moroes: I'm a froob. I'm just trying to farm IP so I can get Garen. My brother is going for Shen. We're pretty damn good at it, but our levels deter "pros" from keeping us in games. So we just practice match most of the time.

    @Sleven: I'm at UCR.

@Daktary: I'm studying Computer Science. My hallmates are pretty nice. Still feels awkward to carry a conversation, though.

@Xiao: As said above, UCR. I'm sure it'll be fun, at least for the most part, not everyone's a total jerk.

You'll get used to the new environment once you make few good friends there. Let them know about our site when you can :)

  • @DeltaX : The best time in college is actually during the freshman time and you can do lot of things during this time. Have fun during your first year.

  • @RON: Heh. That'd be completely out of the blue and... really weird. Most of the people I know aren't really into gaming sites, just games.

@Koshai: I'm enjoying it to a point. The education and stuff is fine. The people... not so much. As I already said, it's really damn awkward to try to "fit in" when your primary interests don't really match everyone else's.

  • Try to have fun with the nonjerks and stay alongside the gamers ;)
