In 2016, a new gaming platform was released, and today (2026), it's still one of the most popular. AMD's commitment to AM4 is one of its greatest successes. AMD is still delivering new CPUs years on from its launch, a rare occurrence in desktop CPUs. The arrival of 3D V-Cache has further prolonged AM4's life, particularly for gamers.

And while DDR5 memory is more expensive than many would prefer, upgrading to a new platform is still costly. AM4 is still not done yet. There is now a cheaper Ryzen 7 5800X3D after the Ryzen 7 5700X3D and the Ryzen 5 5600X3D. The Ryzen 5 5500X3D launched in June 2025 and had an MSRP of $240.

You can now get it more easily in the US. Powered by AMD's 7nm Zen 3 cores, the Ryzen 5 5500X3D has six cores that reach up to 4GHz, and 96MB of L3 cache. It has a TDP of 105W and is rated to support memory speeds up to 3200MHz. It's easily installed in any AM4 motherboard system.

We tested the Ryzen 5 5500X3D on an ASRock X570 Extreme4 motherboard, 16GB of Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4-3200 memory, a Corsair H150i 360mm liquid cooler, and an RTX 3080. Power consumption was impressive. Idling at 76W and at 143W when the CPU was fully loaded. As a result, the 5500X3D is a very efficient processor.

Productivity Performance

Testing with Cinebench R23 resulted in more than 1,300 points in single-threaded performance, putting the 5500X3D in the top half of the pack. It was topped only by higher-end, higher-priced chips and even rivaled the Ryzen 5 5600. Multithreaded performance was just shy of 10,000 points. It was faster than the original Ryzen 7 1800X but still lagged behind its higher-clocked counterpart, the Ryzen 5 5600.

Ryzen 5 5500X3D finished the Car Demo render in Blender in just over four minutes, about 30 seconds behind the Ryzen 5 5600. An encoding test in HandBrake of a 10GB 4K video using the Fast 1080p30 preset took 13.5 minutes and managed to outperform AMD's original Ryzen flagship. This is a decent productivity processor, but the focus is clearly on gaming.

Gaming Performance Overview

To get the most out of the graphics card, we enabled Resizable BAR through the BIOS. Ryzen 5 5500X3D performed very well with an RTX 3080. In Forza Horizon 4, we recorded 231 fps and 169 fps averages at 1% lows on the Ultra preset. This gave it a 12% improvement over the Ryzen 5 5600.

There were no frame stutters. Shadow of the Tomb Raider on an RTX 3080 ran at 97% utilization, suggesting good GPU utilization. Ryzen 5 5500X3D delivered an average of 223 fps and 1% lows of 145 fps. This was on par with the Ryzen 9 7950X3D. Far Cry 6 was a bit more CPU-bound, with GPU utilization around 80%. We achieved an average of 142 fps and a 1% low of 91 fps. It easily surpassed the Ryzen 5 5600, but fell short of the top spot.

Cyberpunk 2077 again demonstrated the power of 3D V-Cache. GPU usage hovered in the 95% range, and the Ryzen 5 5500X3D topped the pack with an average of 150 fps and 99 fps 1% lows. Although the improvement over the Ryzen 5 5600 was not huge, it still claimed the victory.

Ryzen 5 5500X3D was a pleasant surprise.

It outperformed much more costly CPUs in a couple of games. In some tests, it was held back by the RTX 3080, but overall, it was an excellent gaming processor. If you have an AM4-based system, you can upgrade with a new CPU. You don't need to change the motherboard or memory.

This keeps the upgrade price affordable while giving gamers a significant performance boost. Given the cost, the Ryzen 5 5500X3D is an excellent value AM4 upgrade in 2026. If you want to give your PC a lease on life, this is a great option.
