FSR4 on Steam Deck Tested With the Most Demanding AAA Games
Modern upscaling techniques allow Steam Deck to handle visually complex titles with improved clarity and consistency.

Community tools have brought FSR4 to Steam Deck, and you can see how it affects demanding AAA titles right away. You can enable FSR4 in OptiScaler if you use Decky Loader with frame generation disabled. This lets you use modern upscaling techniques on hardware that wasn't made for them.
You can access FSR4 via the OptiScaler menu, and it works with DLSS quality or performance settings, depending on the game. The resolution is set to 800p, the graphics drivers are the same, and frame generation is turned off because it adds latency. The idea is to have a solid experience at 30 fps instead of higher frame rates with input lag. The biggest noticeable difference between this and prior versions of FSR is that it is more stable, with fewer artifacts, fewer pixel breakage, and more consistent detail during motion.

Performance of Spider-Man Remastered
The test shows that Spider-Man Remastered is the easiest game to play. With medium graphics settings, 800p resolution, DLSS quality, and FSR4 turned on, the frame rate is between 30 and 43 fps. Even in the hardest parts of the city, the framerate stays close to 29fps. Buildings, trees, and other distant elements stay the same; visual stability is maintained.
When you switch from DLSS quality to DLSS performance, the speed goes up by about 10 fps without the quality of the images getting worse. The internal resolution drops a lot, but FSR4 rebuilds the picture in a way that keeps it the same even when things happen quickly. Performance can be improved by lowering the graphics settings even more. However, medium settings are still the best balance, as the Steam Deck can maintain above 30 fps without noticeable drops.
The Ghost of Tsushima With FSR4
Ghost of Tsushima is harder, and it used to have heavy pixelation on the Steam Deck. When you set the graphics to medium, the resolution to 800p, and the DLSS quality to high, the images become clearer.
Support for HDR makes things even better, especially during the day. When you look around, the game feels different because there is less noise and image shimmer than with older upscaling methods. It's easy to tell what will happen in each game, but it's not as good as what higher-end computers do.
Black Myth Wukong and the Unreal Engine 5 Requirements
It's one of the hardest jobs for Black Myth Wukong because of Unreal Engine 5. The speed stays at 30fps or a little higher with the graphics settings turned all the way down to 800p and FSR4 set to about 60%. Scenarios with clouds, particles, and large groups of enemies look the same as they did in older versions of FSR.
When you switch back to FSR 3.1, you can instantly see the difference: characters and environments turn into noise and pixel breakage. Going back to FSR4 makes the images stable again, so the game is playable without straining your eyes. Frame generation is still turned off to reduce lag, which is important for fast-paced action.
Results for Horizon Forbidden West
Horizon Forbidden West really tests the limits of the Steam Deck. With very low graphics settings, 800p resolution, and FSR4 performance mode, the framerate fluctuates between 24 and 30 fps. Compared to prior upscaling, image stability improves significantly. You can still see greenery, character details, and distant objects.
When you turn up the graphics settings to low or medium, the drops are bigger, and in some locations, they can drop to 22 fps. When you move from one region to another, you can see that VRAM is limited, which makes performance drop for a short time. Higher settings make everything look clearer; however, the framerate drop means that very low settings are the best choice. Ultra performance mode makes the picture too blurry and is not good for playing.

Comparison to Earlier Versions of FSR
FSR4 is better than FSR3.1 across all tested titles. Image reconstruction is more stable, edges stay the same, and scenes don't split apart when things move quickly. FSR 4 lets many AAA games stay playable on the Steam Deck that weren't before. Still, resolution reconstruction can't replace native rendering.
Final Thoughts
FSR4 makes the Steam Deck last longer by letting you play demanding AAA games at realistic performance levels. When the right settings are used, most of the games that were tested run at about 30 fps with solid images. Unreal Engine 5 games are still the hardest, and some games still push the technology to its limits.
For most recent games, though, FSR4 strikes a good mix between image consistency and performance without needing to generate frames. FSR4 shows that software enhancements can compensate for poor hardware, especially on a Linux-based handheld platform with many users.
