MSI Raider A16 HX B8W Design and Display

The MSI Raider A16 HX B8W features the MSI Dragon logo and an RGB Dragon badge on the back panel. The lighting matches the overall style without being over the top. The laptop features a 16-inch IPS-level display with a 2560×1600 resolution, a 240Hz refresh rate, and a 100% DCI-P3 color gamut.

You can also customize the keyboard's 24-zone RGB lighting, with transparent WASD keys to accentuate the effects. Its chiclet-style keys are rather quiet, so they'll work for long gaming sessions. You'll do most of your everyday pointing using the big, slick trackpad below the keyboard, but if you're into competitive gaming, a dedicated gaming mouse is still the way to go.

Hardware Specifications & Connectivity

The AMD Ryzen 9 8940HX Laptop processor is what you're getting here, with 16 cores, 32 threads, 80MB total cache, and up to 5.3GHz boost clocks. The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 Laptop GPU handles graphics, with 16GB of GDDR7 VRAM and up to 175W of total graphics power with Dynamic Boost.

The tested configuration includes 32GB of DDR5 memory running at 5200MT/s and is upgradeable to 96GB. Storage expands via dual M.2 slots that support PCIe Gen 4 and Gen 5. The system ships with a 2TB drive installed in the Gen 4 slot. Other specifications include Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, a 91.8Wh battery, and Windows 11.

Connectivity includes two USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports and a 3.5mm combo audio jack on the right. The left side features two USB4 ports supporting up to 40Gbps and the DC power input. The rear also includes HDMI 2.1, Gigabit Ethernet, and an additional USB 3.2 Gen 2 port.

MSI Center Performance and Customization

MSI Center provides CPU and GPU usage statistics, temperature monitoring, and fan-speed controls. Its AI Engine can automatically adjust lighting, audio, and performance according to system activity.

Performance profiles include Balanced, Eco, and Silent modes, with options for discrete GPU, hybrid graphics, and integrated graphics. Extreme Performance and Apex modes deliver maximum benchmark performance when connected to external power.

Users can also overclock the GPU core to up to 350MHz, adjust VRAM clock settings, and change fan speeds. Cooler Boost boosts cooling performance, but at the cost of significant fan noise. These options add flexibility but reduce battery life and acoustic comfort for maximum performance.

CPU and GPU Benchmark Results

In Geekbench 7, the Ryzen 9 8940HX scored 2,579 in single-core and 19,894 in multi-core. The results show its great processing power. The RTX 5080 Laptop GPU scored 15,193 in 3DMark Port Royal, averaging 70.34fps. It scored 5,446 points and averaged 54.47 fps in 3DMark Steel Nomad. Meanwhile, 3DMark Time Spy scored us 16,659, reaffirming the laptop's impressive synthetic graphics capabilities.

Gaming Performance at 1440p

Forza Horizon 6 averaged in the low-70fps range at 2560×1600 with Ultra ray tracing and DLSS disabled. Enabling DLSS pushed performance into the 80 fps range. Red Dead Redemption 2, tested at 1440p Ultra with DLSS Quality, averaged mid-80s fps. Without DLSS, performance periodically dipped below 60 fps, demonstrating the advantages of upscaling in demanding games.

Doom: The Dark Ages clocked in at around mid-70fps on 1440p Ultra Nightmare with DLSS off. Gameplay was seamless overall, even with demanding ray tracing and particle effects. Mortal Kombat 1 hit a solid 60fps at 1440p on Very High settings without DLSS. Crimson Desert also performed well at 1440p Cinematic settings with DAA on. The native resolution presentation featured detailed environments with no upscaling.

Final Thoughts

MSI Raider A16 HX B8W Specs: The MSI Raider A16 HX B8W packs a fast 16-core processor, an RTX 5080 Laptop GPU, and a high-refresh-rate display for solid gaming performance. The configurable RGB keyboard, broad connectivity, and variable performance settings round out the package.

Maximum-performance options increase fan noise and shorten battery life, but the laptop still performs well in demanding games and synthetic benchmarks. For gamers looking for high resolutions and serious processing power, the Raider A16 HX B8W is a very attractive high-performance choice.
