After a decade of waiting, fans of Naughty Dog's Uncharted series may finally get to see their favorite treasure hunter hit the big screen. The Uncharted movie has been a difficult project to even get started, and it was having issues before Coronavirus hit. Since June 2009, the film has been experiencing a revolving staff of both directors and actors,  leaving the film on the back burner. But with Tom Holland in the boots of Nathan Drake, it seems that the movie is beginning to take its first steps.

In March 2020, Ruben Fleischer became the seventh director assigned to this screen adaptation. The director of Venom replaced Travis Knight, who was originally having reservations about the film due to Holland's scheduling as Spider-Man. However, it looks like schedules have opened up, and the Uncharted film can finally begin shooting.

Tom Holland posted on his Instagram page on July 14, showing the back of his folding chair, which reads: Nate. With this picture, Holland included the caption, "Day one. #uncharted." With this post, it seems that filming has officially begun for the newest video game adaptation to the big screen. However, the Uncharted series is a beloved story to many dedicated fans, and past adaptations of video games have been sub-par, at best. However, Holland revealed in a recent interview with IGN that Uncharted would stop this trend.

According to Holland, the Uncharted game will be more of a prequel to the series, rather than an outright adaptation. "I think what Uncharted offers that most video game films don't is that it's an origin story to the games. So if you played the games, you haven't seen what's going to happen in the film, and if you haven't played the games, you're going to enjoy the film because it's information that everyone else is getting at the same time..."

While this is a different approach than most fans were expecting, only time will tell how the film will really turn out. Holland will be joined by Mark Wahlberg, who plays Drake's father-figure, treasure-hunting mentor, Sully. As an Uncharted fan myself, I cannot wait to see Holland in Drake's shoes. If the actor portrays Nathan Drake anywhere as accurately as he portrayed Spider-Man in the recent Marvel movies, I think that fans might finally get a video game movie that rises to the bar that the game has set.

Sony revealed back in April that the Uncharted movie's official release date has been moved up from October 8, 2021, to July 16, 2021.
