Tencent Acquires Minor Stake In Life is Strange Developer

Tencent uses funds to obtain minor stake in Dontnod Entertainment

By Grayshadow, Posted 28 Jan 2021

Tencent has quickly become one of the most infamous companies in entertainment. Purchasing large shares in profound gaming companies and known for harvesting information on users for China. Now the company has a minor stake in Dontnod Entertainment.

Life is Strange,NoobFeed,

The company is using the funds to self-publish a new IP on PC, console, and mobile devices.

The funds raised will mainly be used to finance the ramp-up of DONTNOD's strategy to develop new self-published intellectual properties worldwide on PC, consoles and mobile platforms, and thereby take full advantage of positive trends within the industry for creators of internationally renowned and original games, such as DONTNOD.

With Tencent continuing to grow thanks to heavily monetized mobile titles many gamers are becoming increasingly worried about the company's influence. Already the company is mainly responsible for localizing titles for the Chinese market from global gaming publishers and with China having strict control on what can and cannot be shown. Already companies have bent the knee to China's regulations for an increase in profit, and many fear it'll become the norm for not only games localized in China but globally to cut cost. Such as when Ubisoft censored content in Rainbow Six Siege to comply with Chinese regulations in all versions and reversing the decision after backlash or when Activision Blizzard banned Blitzchung for supporting Hong Kong protests during an official streaming event.
