Dark Souls Launches On PS3, 360 in 2011

Do you like punishment? Brutal challenges against hordes of enemies? Take on behemoth boss battles that only take one or two hits until you die? More importantly, are you a sadist?

If you answered yes to all of the above, then you should be happy to know that developer From Software—yes, that’s right; the same people who created Demon’s Souls—is working on a spiritual successor to the 2009 RPG hit. Set to launch in Japan, Europe, and North America this year, Dark Souls (codenamed Project Dark) will feature familiar elements from the previous game. The game will remain an exclusive PS3 title in Japan, while publisher Namco Bandai Games will handle the western release/(s) of the game on both the Playstation 3 and the Xbox 360.

Though it is eerily similar to Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls does not have any story connectivity to Boletaria whatsoever.  According to Famitsu (via Siliconera), however, the same gameplay mechanics its predecessor had remains intact as far as we know. Character customization will make a return, but instead of the class system present in Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls will feature a branching system that lets players determine characters’ play styles to their liking.

From Software also stated Dark Souls will be a much larger game than its predecessor, giving players one connective world to explore, instead of the five separate worlds present in the last game. Also, online multiplayer will relatively be the same, giving players the ability to leave notes for players, invade and terrorize other players’ worlds or engage in some co-op action. The best thing about all this? You don’t have to worry about connecting to a central server, which means Dark Souls won’t face a server shutdown (Demon’s Souls’ online server will shut down this March, in case you didn’t know).

I’m sure everyone knows of Demon’s Souls notorious difficulty. Fans of the game will be glad to know that From Software is aiming to develop a game that is just as difficult as their previous one. So basically if you’re a sadist, you should feel right at home with Dark Souls.
