The next mainline Guilty Gear fighting game has reportedly been cancelled, shocking fans of Arc System Works' acclaimed series. According to multiple industry insiders, an unannounced successor to 2021's Guilty Gear Strive has been quietly shelved within the past few weeks.
Sources close to Arc System Works confirmed the project's cancellation but gave no official reason. The news comes in the wake of a recent company showcase that completely ditched any mention of Guilty Gear, fueling speculation that development had stalled.

Despite this setback, the franchise is not believed to be dead. Reportedly, when asked about Guilty Gear's future, one anonymous source told Insider Gaming that the series is "back to the drawing board," and that the cancelled title simply wasn't finished yet.
In other words, Arc System Works appears to be rethinking the project rather than abandoning the series altogether. Some sources' coverage echoed this nuance, noting that the next Guilty Gear game is "not completely dead". Still, the cancellation means fans will have to wait much longer for a new entry.
Guilty Gear -Strive-, which first launched on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series in 2021, was only released on Switch in January 2025 and was otherwise considered a success, with ongoing character DLC. With the presumed sequel now on ice, the next Guilty Gear may be years away.
Industry watchers note that Arc System Works is busy with other fighting-game projects, which may have contributed to the delay. Notably, the studio is developing Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, a new tag-team brawler featuring Marvel Comics characters, which was announced in June 2025 and is slated for release in 2026.
Given Arc System's resources are likely spread across multiple titles, it's possible the unannounced Guilty Gear was shelved to reallocate effort. As insiders observed, with the upcoming Marvel Tōkon on the slate, Arc System may have opted to "put all its resources" into that project for now.

For fans of the Guilty Gear franchise, the news is both bittersweet and exciting. On one hand, losing an anticipated game is disappointing. On the other hand, leaks suggest that the series remains a priority: Arc System Works was reportedly seeking alternatives rather than abandoning the brand.
Until there is official word, players can only hope that the "drawing board" process leads to a stronger game in the end. In the meantime, the studio's slate still includes fighting titles to enjoy, such as Marvel Tōkon in 2026, suggesting that while the next Guilty Gear might be further out than expected, Arc System's famed expertise in fighting games remains in play.
