Lionsgate – the company behind films such as American Psycho, 3:10 to Yuma and The Hunger Games franchise – had announced that they wanted to invest in different forms of media, including video games. According to a press release, Lionsgate decided they are going to invest in Telltale Games, the company that has brought us many of cinematic games experiences. Lionsgate is responsible for many blockbuster hits, which means that this team up could very well be a match made in heaven, putting two titans of their respective industries together and having them collaborate.

Telltale Games has sold millions of copies of their games, which emulate a cinematic universe wherein the overall outcomes are dictated entirely by the player. Characters like Lee and Clementine have now been established in the video game conscious. It has become part of a new standard of adventure-like games and it appears that Lionsgate would like a piece of that action. This collaboration will help Telltale Games work on a new IP alongside Lionsgate, who have both shocked their respective industries with their success.

According to Lionsgate Chief Executive Officer Jon Feltheimer and Telltale CEO Kevin Bruner from the PR Newswire:

“Telltale is one of the premier storytellers in the gaming world today,” said Lionsgate Chief Executive Officer Jon Feltheimer. “Their leadership in narrative-driven episodic games, together with our investment and the potential opportunities created by our premium content expertise, will continue to strengthen their ability to offer exciting new avenues of storytelling to their next generation audiences across a broad range of platforms.”

“Lionsgate is one of the most innovative, entrepreneurial and impressive content companies in the world today. I’m delighted to welcome an experienced executive like Jon, a leader who shares our unique vision, to our Board,” said Telltale CEO Kevin Bruner. “Lionsgate has a great track record in developing and marketing feature films as well as platform-defining premium scripted television. This partnership will accelerate Telltale’s ability to create not only original games, but episodic television series based on our game properties – an area at the cutting edge of industry growth.”

There will now be a Super Show from Telltale Games that, with the help of Lionsgate, will help Telltale establish their new IP. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Telltale stated in regards to a Super Show:

“A “Super Show” episode combines one part of interactive playable content with one part of scripted television style content. Both pieces, when combined together, are what make an actual Super Show “episode.” As we’ve been developing the series, we’re using both mediums in concert to deliver our story.”

This allows Telltale Games and Lionsgate to work together to hopefully bring us something great, and only time will tell to see just how well these two cooperate and what we’ll get out of it.
