A brand-new collection of old-school beat 'em up games has been officially revealed, and it's a huge hit with longtime fans of old-school superhero games. The upcoming package, called the Marvel Maximum Collection (with a big "X" to emphasize its mutant roots), includes a bunch of classic Marvel games that made arcades and 16-bit platforms what they were during the genre's golden age.

Konami is putting out the collection, and Limited Run Games is also helping put it together for fans. This collection is a carefully chosen piece of Marvel gaming history for people who grew up crowded around arcade games or learning how to play side-scrolling brawlers at home.

The famous X-Men arcade game is at the heart of the collection.

This is the full arcade version of the game. Many people still think of it as one of the best mutant beat 'em ups ever made, and fans will always love it. A lot of people still think it's one of the best X-Men games ever made, if not the best beat 'em up game with Marvel's mutants. This version has everything from the arcade, like the famous cabinet action that lets more than one person fight at the same time.

It's even better now that it can be played online with up to six other people. Fans will be able to pick their favorite X-Men characters and work together to fight Magneto's forces. This looks like the best way for superheroes to work together ever.

In addition to X-Men, the Marvel Maximum Collection includes many other great old games for various systems. Captain America and the Avengers will be available in three different versions: arcade, Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, and NES. This will give players an interesting look at how the game changed over time and across different systems. Spider-Man/Venom: Maximum Carnage is also included, and you can get it for both the Super Nintendo and the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive.

Many Marvel fans still remember Maximum Carnage as one of the best 16-bit brawlers ever made.

It stood out with its comic-inspired graphics, fast-paced gameplay, and soundtrack, and many players spent a lot of time playing it when it first came out. Venom/Spider-Man: Separation Anxiety, the follow-up, is also in the collection, this time for both the SNES and the Genesis/Mega Drive. This is the follow-up to Maximum Carnage. It added shared gameplay and new characters to the formula, making it an important addition for superhero action fans.

Arcade's Revenge features Spider-Man and the X-Men, and it's available for the Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, Game Boy, and Game Gear. The game takes players through Arcade's dangerous Murderworld and is an interesting part of Marvel's early console and mobile library. There is even the Silver Surfer for the NES in the collection. This is an extremely hard game that has earned a reputation for being very hard. Some players like how harsh it is and how different it is to play, while others remember it as one of the hardest games of its time.

Along with the games themselves, the Marvel Maximum Collection adds several modern features to make these old games easier to access.

The digital archive is one of the best parts. It has high-resolution scans of the original box art, user manuals, and old ads. This museum-style material gives history more meaning for collectors and longtime fans. It also comes with a music player that lets users listen to famous chiptune tunes from all the games included. A lot of people remember those tunes just as well as the games themselves.

Most importantly, the collection adds the ability to rewind and save states. This feature is especially important for games like Silver Surfer and Arcade's Revenge, which are known for their many boss fights and are considered hard. Some players may finally be able to beat games that seemed impossible to beat before these modern benefits.

There are also options for the screens so that players can choose between clear, modern graphics or a classic CRT look with scanline filters for that real Saturday morning feel. The X-Men arcade game, on the other hand, benefits from rollback netcode, which makes online multiplayer games smoother and more reliable.

Bonus features like museum material and cheat menus make what looks like a full retro package rather than a simple port collection complete.

The PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch will all receive the Marvel Maximum Collection at launch. There hasn't been a dedicated version released for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, but players who get new hardware should still be able to play.

Overall, the collection is a great way to honor Marvel's history of beat-'em-up games. Many longtime gamers had games like X-Men, Maximum Carnage, and Separation Anxiety in their collections. Some people may not have had the chance to enjoy the original arcade machine versions fully. This release gives them a chance to play these classics again or properly discover them for the first time.

With online gameplay, quality-of-life improvements, and a huge library of old content, the Marvel Maximum Collection looks set to bring back memories and make games more fun to play. This could be one of the most exciting retro games of the year for people who like old-school superhero brawlers.
