There are faster fights, bigger worlds, and unexpected turns in the new gameplay.

It's getting ready for a much bigger return for a game that used to be pretty unknown. Mortal Shell 2 has come back with a new gameplay trailer, and it's clear right away that this isn't just a safe follow-up. Sources say that the sequel builds on the fame of the first game as a cult Souls-like hit, but this time it has more resources, more ambition, and a clear goal to stand out rather than blend in.

Even though a very small team made it, the first Mortal Shell got a lot of attention for catching the lonely, oppressive mood that is common in the genre. Now, that team is very different from before because it has grown a lot. The new video shows a world that seems bigger without losing its sense of being alone.

Instead of a huge open world, the game has a "compact open world" with more than 60 handcrafted dungeons and areas. This choice seems to have been made to keep exploration important without being excessive. With the new world map and fast travel, getting around these areas should be easier than in the original game, which handled things more traditionally.

The main idea behind Mortal Shell 2 is the same one that made the first game stand out: the shell system.

Each fallen hero gives players a different way to fight and a set of skills they can use. This time, it looks like there are more shells to play with, including some old ones and some new ones with faces. Some players prefer stealthy play, while others prefer bold or defensive play. This gives players more freedom in how they approach each battle.

The way fights happen is one of the biggest changes. The old energy system is gone, which changes the pace significantly. It feels like you can attack, dodge, and move around more freely, which makes fights faster and smoother. For players who are used to carefully controlling every move, that change could make the successor feel very different from the first one.

But the main tension stays the same thanks to features like being knocked out of a shell during battle, which leaves players open to attack but gives them a chance to heal and return to the fight.

The tone of the world itself leans strongly toward something darker and more unsettling. The game's settings are very detailed, with landscapes in disrepair, creepy lighting, and enemies meant to look gross. These aren't your typical dream bad guys. Many of them look crazy and unpredictable, which adds to the feeling that the world is dangerous in ways other than just being hard to fight.

Even short glimpses of bosses give players a taste of the bigger, scarier fights that are coming later in the game.

Combat isn't just about staying alive; it's also about showing off. The video shows powerful finishing moves and special riposte movements that change based on the enemy. These moments give every fight more meaning, so wins don't feel like they're just another day at the office.

Then there are the shocks. Players are seen using firearms, including a shotgun and a rapid-fire weapon, alongside standard weapons. It's an odd addition to a setting that leans so heavily toward dark fantasy, but sources say the developers are going with what feels fun rather than strictly following genre rules.

There are also little details from the first movie that help ground the experience. Characters you know show up, and the quieter parts of the game, like dealing with the world when you're not fighting, seem to be kept. Even though these features don't make the game what it is, they help keep the mood that made the first game stand out.

An exact date hasn't been set yet, but Mortal Shell 2 is expected to launch later this year on modern platforms.

So far, it looks like the movie isn't afraid to try new things, even if they are different from what fans might expect. The real question is whether the mix between atmosphere and action will still be there when players get their hands on it. It looks bigger, faster, and less predictable. Will this risky move make the show better or turn it into something completely different?
