New ArmA 3 details surface

ArmA 3 is still far away: the third installment in this complex military simulator won't see the light of day until well into 2012. However, that grant us all the more time to anticipate and speculate on this hyper-realistic shooter. It therefore fills my heart with joy (I AM kind of an ArmA fanboy, after all) that new details have recently surfaced regarding the game's story and background.

On the official ArmA 3 website, the Intel section reveals precious information regarding what it is we're going to do in this game - something which was a bit of a mystery until now. The game will take place on Limnos, a fictional Greek island of high strategic importance (Cyprus, anyone?). The island is about 300 square kilometers in size, making it bigger than ArmA 2's 220km2 map.

In other words: Guns don't kill people, I kill people. With guns!

The main antagonist (or protagonist, depending on how you will play the game) will be Iran, but the island is also home to bandits, rebels and, of course, civilians.

A more vague aspect of the new information is the equipment. The Armory section mentions "state-of-the-art weapons", "the most advanced protective gear", "ultramodern assault and sniper rifles" and "even some experimental weapons". Taking into account that the game takes place about 1-2 decades in the future, it seems that the developers are allowed to use their imagination a bit more in this ArmA installment, as, until now, the games in the series have only featured existing weapons.

I, for one, am very curious how these new additions will turn out. If they can be delivered with a more polished and refined version of the existing elements of the series, we might just be in for a beast of a game. For more information, you can check out the official ArmA 3 website for yourself.
