New Metro: Last Light gameplay footage released

Its release is still far ahead of us, but the new gameplay footage of Metro: Last Light, the sequel to Metro 2033, already gives us a pretty good idea of what we can aspect from A4 Games' latest project. This curious sci-fi game, which is set in the subway tunnels of Moscow after a nuclear disaster, is set to improve some aspects of its predecessor, but must also be careful to avoid some of the common pitfalls that many modern shooters fall victim to.

In a 13-minute playthrough demo we see returning protagonist Artyom break into a neonazi base, aided by Khan, a mysterious NPC that was also present in the original game. The stealth sequences seem to have improved, with it now being easier to sneak up to enemies and cut their throats before anyone notices, whilst lighting still plays an important part in the whole sneaking process. The action itself also looks a bit more polished, with there apparently being no more troubles with hit registration. New weapons such as the minigun also look promising.

Khan is ready to mess up your mind again with his ghostly antics.

One thing that did bug me about this gameplay footage is that too much of it was scripted. Granted, Metro 2033 already was pretty linear, but I just hope 4A won't try to cram too much bombastic cinematical sequences into their game, as those tend to disrupt the flow of the gameplay. And seeing as the gameplay itself looks tight, that would be a shame.

You can watch the gameplay footage here.

Metro: Last Light is scheduled for release in 2012 and will be available for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.
