Moon Studios' No Rest for the Wicked sparks outrage as Xbox gets sidelined in favor of PS5 and Switch 2 priorities.

The dream team behind the highly acclaimed Ori series, Moon Studios, has caused a stir in the gaming community with a quiet but calculated announcement: their next game, No Rest for the Wicked, might not come out on Xbox. The news came from comments made by Thomas Mahler, the head of Moon Studios. These comments were shared on social media, and PlayStation Lifestyle picked them up.

Mahler says that, based on how the market is moving right now, a PlayStation 5 release makes the most sense from a business point of view. A Nintendo Switch 2 version is also being thought about. It's interesting, though, that Xbox doesn't seem to be on that list of priorities, especially since it comes from a company that helped make Xbox indies what they were.

Mahler made it clear that nothing is set in stone. He said, "We want to support all platforms, but based on the numbers, PS5 makes the most sense right now." Later, he said that a delayed launch is possible, and Xbox might not be as important in the rollout. Still, there was no firm promise made.

Not surprisingly, this made a lot of Xbox fans very angry. Moon Studios was a well-known partner of Microsoft. They made two exclusive gems, Ori and the Blind Forest and Ori and the Will of the Wisps, that were big hits with Game Pass users and helped build the Xbox environment at a time when there weren't many great exclusives.

Now that No Rest for the Wicked is in early access on PC and is about to come out on all consoles, questions about platform loyalty are coming up again. Is this just a business choice based on hard numbers and fixed-cost economics? Or is there an unsaid change in how people feel, a new level of trust between Microsoft and Moon Studios?

One idea that is becoming more popular is that the studio might be using the public conversation to start talks with Microsoft, possibly about integrating Game Pass or giving the game limited-time-only access. The fact that Mahler said he was "open to talking about things with Microsoft" doesn't sound like a closed door as much as it does like an invitation—the first step in a bigger conversation.

Still, this event makes people worry about Xbox's apparent strength in the console market as a whole. If even trusted partners start to put less importance on the platform, it could make it harder for Microsoft to get interesting material from studios other than its own. Platform loyalty is a thing of the past because third-party developers are now more interested in install base, performance measures, and ecosystem ROI.

No Rest for the Wicked's situation shows how the balance of power is changing in the gaming space. No longer does it matter who stood by you five years ago. It's about who can help your game succeed right now. The data also seems to point toward Sony and Nintendo for Moon Studios.

It's impossible to hear Microsoft's silence. It's still not clear if this is a planned restraint or an early sign of a bigger problem. It's clear that Moon Studios' next move will be closely watched by players, rivals, stakeholders, and platform owners alike.

This generation of consoles has been marked by ecosystem fights, content exclusivity, and developers changing their minds. No Rest for the Wicked could become much more than just a new action-RPG. That fire could be a sign that big changes in the Earth's crust are about to happen.
