Nvidia Seeks To Buy ARM Semiconductors

SoftBank is looking to sell off their CPU architecture

Nvidia is currently on the prowl to purchase the CPU company ARM after Apple has shown disinterest. ARM is currently owned by the Japanese holding and investment company SoftBank, who had considered a sale earlier in July. ARM itself doesn’t actually manufacture CPUs, but designs and licenses the chip architecture, primarily for mobile devices. With such a purchase, Nvidia would expand their foothold beyond computers and game consoles and have a wider presences in the hardware of Android and Apple devices. Nvidia currently does license ARM’s technology, but on a minor scale.

SoftBank acquired ARM back in 2016 but at least 1/4th of the company has been sold through the years via shares. SoftBank become under further pressure after WeWork’s failed public offering in 2019, and lower revenue due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The sale of ARM may be a means of recouping their financial losses. However, because the deal with Nvidia has not been finalized, SoftBank still has the option of finding another buyer or retaining ownership of ARM.
