During E3 2019, Microsoft revealed its upcoming console, Project Scarlett, would be launching in winter 2020. Now, Wired has been the first to report from Sony they will also be releasing their next console late 2020 called the PlayStation 5.

Sony skipped E3 2019 and gave Microsoft the leg up when it came to announcing their upcoming console. However, it also came with a lot of bold promises from Microsoft. Sony decided to go the more secluded route, revealing limited information about the PS5.

Sony stated the PS5 controller will be redesigned to include haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, allowing developers to program the L2 and R2 buttons. The triggers will also have changed resistance depending on the game.

Honestly, I loved the PS4 controllers. They were a massive improvement from the PS3 controllers. Which I hated, especially the triggers and thumbsticks.

The Wired article from Peter Rubin we also got some details about the system. Such as players able to download only the part of a game they want.

“Even though it will be fairly fast to boot games, we don’t want the player to have to boot the game, see what’s up, boot the game, see what’s up. Multiplayer game servers will provide the console with the set of joinable activities in real time. Single-player games will provide information like what missions you could do and what rewards you might receive for completing them—and all of those choices will be visible in the UI. As a player you just jump right into whatever you like.”

This will likely be a positive feature as games are getting bigger, especially future patches, and sometimes require hours to download before a game can be played. For those who want just to hop into multiplayer or single-player, shaving off an hour of download time will likely yield more positive gaming experiences.

We also learned that the PS5 will have a 4K Blu-Ray player. However, if you don't have a 4K television or monitor connected to the console then there's no point. But it's nice to have the option.

Currently, the PS4 still has a strong lineup of titles including Death Stranding, The Last of Us: Part II, and Ghosts of Tsushima. It has not been confirmed if the PS5 will play PS4 games but considering that the PS4 shipped over 100 million units and is considered the most popular system this generation it's likely it will. But keeping the cost affordable will be a challenge, we don't need another launch price similar to the PS3.
