The PlayStation Portable 3 or "PlayStation 6 handheld" is an unofficial name for the next generation of PlayStation handheld hardware. It may have more power than thought. In a recent Digital Foundry podcast, the team discussed early specs and how they might relate to AMD's newest Strix Halo-based handhelds in terms of performance.
There was a report that mostly focused on how Sony's custom silicon and better integration of hardware and software could make the handheld work more effectively and efficiently than more powerful PC-based systems in the real world.

Better optimization is better than raw power.
There were questions about whether the new handheld, which might have a higher-wattage next-generation processor, could compete with or beat AMD's Strix Halo chips, which are used in devices like the GPD Win 5. An analyst said that Sony's approach—putting optimization over brute-force performance—might lead to more consistent games.
He went on to say that PlayStation's Spectral Super Resolution technology and its planned next-generation version could make things run more smoothly than the DirectX or Proton layers that PC handhelds usually use.
"PC handhelds use general-purpose software, but a PlayStation device gets deep, low-level optimization, which is typical of console development," The report read.
A device made for efficiency and focus.
This idea backs up a long-known fact about game hardware: because they are designed to do one thing, consoles often perform better than PCs with similar specs. Developers can get the most out of hardware because they only need to worry about a single version.
On the other hand, PC handhelds need to work with many different setups, which makes them less efficient. Because they don't have the "brute force" edge of desktop computers, these portable PCs have problems that a gaming system like Sony's handheld could solve.
The report even mentioned the Nintendo Switch 2, noting that future games like Star Wars Outlaws already run surprisingly well on Nintendo's not-yet-released hardware. This is a good example of Sony's plans for handheld devices.
An exciting new era of handheld devices.
If Sony can optimize its new handheld for console-level performance while using modern AMD architecture, it could change how people think about how well mobile games should run. The PlayStation Portable 3 might soon be able to compete with the top PC handhelds, even though the company hasn't announced any details about its specs or even given it a name.
