Prison Bans PlayStation 3
News by Craig Bryan on Jun 14, 2009
Rye Hill prison, near Rugby, Warwickshire has been at the centre of much controversy this week as it was announced that prison bosses have banned inmates from using Sony PlayStation 3 consoles, as they fear it could help them to escape.
The theory is that the built-in modem and Bluetooth connection that the console possesses could be used to communicate to people on the outside world via mobile phones and laptop computers, in an attempt to organise escape plots.
An inmate from the prison describes the decision as banging his head on the proverbial brick wall, explaining that Sony’s hardware didn’t have a built-in modem at all, “I managed to disprove this, but the security department insist the console has.”
Further controversy has arisen following the announcement that hard-earned tax payer’s money has been spent buying consoles and computer games for inmates between 2005 and 2008 using the Prison Services IEP scheme. This has called for a change in the rules where prisoners would pay for their own luxuries depending on how well they’ve behaved.
